PreS—Little Yak senses something in the air and his mom tells him that "Snow is coming." The youngster sets out to tell his animal friends and find out what they do to prepare for the coming of winter. He speaks to Pika, Blue Thrush, and Brown Bear, but their answers—gather grass, fly to a warmer home, head off for a long sleep—do not satisfy him. Only when flurries begin and Mother Yak tells him to "snuggle close" does Little Yak finally learn what to do. He feels lucky because, "While all the other animals are sleeping, or hiding, or have gone away, yaks get to see the beautiful snow." When Mom tells Little Yak that the snow is on its way, the little ungulate is excited. He rushes to tell Pika, who explains that he's been gathering grass to nibble all winter; Blue Thrush, who announces his upcoming migration south; and Brown Bear, who tells Little Yak about his imminent hibernation. Do yaks do any of these things? "No, Little Yak," says his mother. They have their thick shaggy coats to take them through the winter, and "little yaks snuggle up close to their moms." This simple yet satisfying story smoothly introduces various animals' winter coping strategies while framing Little Yak's quest in a question-and-answer format all small children will recognize. Allen's now-signature hand-drawn, computer-colored cartoons feature appealingly goggly eyes and fuzzy textures. (Picture book. 2-5)
