Children's Literature
AGERANGE: Ages 4 to 8.

The power of a small energetic boy to rule a family is told through the story of his non-stop travels through a day, from the point of view of his wriggling, galloping, rarely-still wizzy foot. As if outside his control, it first leads him on a campaign to arouse his parents early in the morning, gathering in his wake his sister, the family dog and the cat. Fueled with breakfast, the boy charges about--he plays in the kitchen, raises a ruckus throughout house and, when scolded, runs riot in the wide yard. The rhythmic language is suggestive of the tramp, tramp of an army on the move--a fitting image for the boisterous little boy. The bold palette of the illustrations energizes the story, making it a multi-sensory experience. The parents work hard to keep up with their little boy and impress as both slightly harassed and tolerant of his extreme exuberance. When all winds down, with one curtain call, at the end of the day, the reader shares the parents' exhaustion and relief that all has ended happily. There is no doubt, however, that the wizzy foot will be on the march again tomorrow. The book jacket includes a brief bio of the author and illustrator, as well as a list of "Instructions for Care and Feeding of a Wizzy Foot." This book would be a good addition to a preschool, an early elementary reading program or a lesson based on learning parts of the body. Reviewer: Hazel Buys

Kirkus Reviews
WIZZY FOOT may be just the perfect name to give to the array of both negative and positive behaviors exhibited by rambunctious toddlers. From the moment of waking, the WIZZY FOOT itches to be in action, stalking, stomping, banging, dancing, growling, waking the household and keeping them hopping throughout the day. Schotter's rollicking rhymes bounce readers right along, leading them from one activity to the next: "Eeny meeny miny moe. / It simply will NOT tiptoe!" Onomatopoeic words abound, making this perfect for read-alouds or library programs in which children can act out the parts. The artwork is truly inspired. Wohnoutka's exuberant child parades through the text, his actions huge and filling up the brightly colored pages. The facial expressions are spot-on, from the dismay of the parents who are attempting to get some work done, to their obvious joy in playing with their children. This is a loving tribute to the wild WIZZY FOOT in every child, sure to bring a smile to parents' lips . . . as long as their own is safely tucked into bed. (Picture book. 3-6)
