Editorial Reviews

New York Times
Unlike many other books geared to the starting school set, When You Go to Kindergartenrecognizes the larger issues that concern kindergartners and their parents.
Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Aided by copious upbeat photographs, the creator of Bunnicula examines ``an exciting part of growing up.'' Ages 4-up. (Aug.)
Children's Literature - Susie Wilde
This book takes a nonfiction approach to school starting. With bright colorful photographs Betsy Imershein pictures Howe's straight-forward text. Together they cover everything from the excitement of learning new things, difficulties of parting, understanding the different learning levels of others, and basics like line up and hand raising. A great introduction to familiarize and dispel the fear of unknown situations.
School Library Journal
PreS-K-Other than a mention of computers in the classroom, this revised edition of Howe's guide to kindergarten (Knopf, 1986; o.p.) has very few textual changes. The author tells youngsters what school might look like and how they might get there, and describes some of the possible activities. The real value of this update is in Imershein's new full-color photos that dominate each page, bringing the world of school to life for anxious youngsters. Multicultural children are welcomed and taught by both male and female teachers. Smiling, busy kids engaged in many activities portray school as an exciting, interesting, and happy place. Allan Ahlberg's Starting School (Viking, 1988) addresses some of the same issues, but not as admirably as Howe. While the original is adequate, this update is definitely worth purchasing. It's a perfect choice for adults to share with new young students.-Dot Minzer, North Barrington School, Barrington, IL
Hazel Rochman
The photographs are in full color in this revised edition of a black-and-white photo-essay first published eight years ago. There are very few changes in the text, which is direct, informative, and friendly, telling the child what to expect. The pictures show kids learning through all kinds of play; with a teacher, with other kids, and alone. One sign of the 1990s is a relaxed approach to technology: the child is told that "you may begin to learn how to use a computer," and story time includes listening with earphones to stories on tape. Libraries with heavy preschool audiences will want multiple copies of this cheerful guide.

Meet the Author

James Howe began his writing career with Bunnicula, which was published in 1979. Bunnicula has received numerous awards as a favorite among children throughout the U.S. and Canada. It was also the basis of a popular television special, a record and a tape, and has been published in the United Kingdom, as well as in German- and French-speaking countries. Howe so enjoyed writing as Harold — the shaggy dog narrator of Bunnicula — that he went on to write Howliday Inn, The Celery Stalks at Midnight and Nighty-Nightmare.

James Howe lives with his wife, Betsy Imershein, and their daughter, Zoe, in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.
