Overview

Christ's answer to His disciples' request has become the model prayer and still teaches us today, for through its beautiful simplicity the Lord's Prayer touches all of life. It expresses our need for salvation, our very dependence on our Heavenly Father for breath and bread, and our praise and thanks for all that He is and does. Its words are few, yet it is a prayer overflowing with treasures of wisdom and encouragement for your everyday life.

Philip Ryken looks at the power and truth within each phrase of the Lord's Prayer, draws them together with other biblical passages, and shows how you can make this prayer your own. His warm approach, examples, and illustrations will enrich your heart and strengthen your prayer life, for the more you study the Lord's Prayer, the better you are able to pray. And the more you pray, the more deeply you are drawn into communion with God.

Editorial Reviews

Raymond C. Ortlund
The Lord's Prayer is a clear path into communion with God. When You Pray by Phil Ryken is a clear path into the Lord's Prayer. Anyone whose heart longs for God will find sure guidance here.
Sinclair Ferguson
When You Pray is a model exposition of the model prayer -- clear but never clinical, instructive but never tedious, challenging but never crushing. It is thoroughly biblical and therefore wonderfully practical. Ryken’s patient unfolding of the Lord’s Prayer phrase by phrase simultaneously engages the mind, directs the will, warms the heart, and—best of all—will make you want to pray.
Archie Parrish
Written in a strongly devotional spirit and based on solid scholarship, Philip Ryken’s When You Pray: Making the Lord’s Prayer Your Own is a rare book. Martin Luther said that the Book of Psalms contains the whole Bible in a single book and the Lord’s Prayer summarizes the Psalms in a few words. Therefore, this pregnant portion of Scripture is a key that can unlock the entire Bible.
