Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Dianna Geers
Both authors of this book were bullied as children and parented children who were bullied. It offers a personal look at attempts to help their children deal with being bullied, as well as reflections on lessons learned. Motivations for bullying and varying types of bullying are discussed. There are also concrete steps that parent can take to monitor their children and intervene if necessary, as well as ways to collaborate with others such as school administrators and parents. The authors also offer ways to impact the community, help develop a systematic antibullying program, and raise children as accepting, thoughtful individuals. When Your Child Is Being Bullied is hopeful and empowering. Most readers will be able to look past a bit of redundancy to read this practical and personal side of the issue. This book would be especially helpful to parents who see their children struggling with bullying or who want to be prepared or even to discuss with their own children about not bullying. The book contains some judgmental concepts that not all readers may find acceptable. For example, the authors make a blanket statement that all behavior stemming from nonacceptance is "Neanderthal." This may offend some readers whose belief systems do not support certain lifestyles. It would add to a balanced collection of books on the subject, and the personal nature may compliment research-based literature. Reviewer: Dianna Geers
