Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Child therapist Weisberger here expands and updates advice contained in her previous book, Your Young Child and You (1975). She stresses that the needs of children under five require special attention today, in families where both the mother and the father work outside the home. The writing reflects a warm, empathetic person restating the importance of parental concern for and intimacy with their small children. There are practical suggestions for handling situations linked to toilet training and other disciplines as well as more serious problems that may arise: a toddler is hospitalized or separated from parents temporarily, traumatized by divorce, etc. Weisberger offers counseling to fathers, in view of their greater role in child care in these times when over half the mothers hold outside jobs. Library Journal - Library Journal
Child therapist Weisberger here addresses parents facing the dilemma of balancing their needs with those of their children and families. She covers parental concerns such as toilet training, discipline, fathers, sex education, and divorce. Weisberger has strong opinions on what should be happening in the healthy development of children. She encourages mothers who have a choice to stay at home to do so, and she states that she offers working mothers advice on dealing with the problems of separation caused by their decision. Working mothers will prefer T. Berry Brazelton's approach in Working and Caring ( LJ 11/1/85), but they should not overlook the sound and logical advice offered here on many developmental issues.
