All Music Guide - Alex Henderson
In the '80s and '90s, England's dance music team Stock, Aitken & Waterman was often accused of being too slick for its own good, and favoring style over substance. But the producers/songwriters also known for their work with Dead or Alive and Samantha Fox should definitely be proud of their work on fellow Briton Rick Astley's often captivating debut album, Whenever You Need Somebody. The best dance music works both on and off the dancefloor, and this certainly holds true on such slick yet gritty fare as "Together Forever," "Never Gonna Give You Up," and "Don't Say Goodbye." There are a few weak moments -- the lackluster "No More Looking for Love" being a glaring example -- but overall, this CD proved Astley to be a welcome addition to the British R&B scene.

    The Idol Creation

I remember this CD when I was in college.I sing and I wanted to sound just like Rick. If my vocals were as strong, smooth and sincere as the ones Astley reveals on this CD I would have been a ledgen by now. He's not and I often wonder why. If you need a man's man view listen, dance and discover with this work. Its one of the best. And yes at 34 I still pull out this CD, remember the romantic times, and apply the genres of this CD to todays situations.

    A must have!

This is a great album that features Rick's booming and soulful voice. Some of his best known songs are here including ''Never Gonna Give You Up'', ''Together Forever'' and ''It Would Take a Strong Man''. This is a prime example of white soul.
