Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
Art can transport us all over the world and back in time. This book is a journey around the world and through time via 13 pieces of art, which can all be seen at the Art Institute in Chicago. The journey begins in Japan during the Edo period (18th century) with one of Hokusai's "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji." Hokusai was an exceptional master of the genre of wood cutting, having produced over 30,000 wood-cut prints in his lifetime. The next stop is Australia and Christo and Jeanne-Claude's "Wrapped Coast, One Million Square Feet" from 1969. This sculpture-scape required 125 people to complete. An Ansel Adams photograph, "Moon and Mount McKinley, Denali National Park" keeps us in the 20th century and continuing East on our journey. Diego Rivera's mural "The Great City of Tenochtitlan" carries us back 500 years to the capital of the Aztec empire in Central America. Romare Bearden's collage of Harlem, "The Block," is a tribute to the neighborhood that inspired his work. An industrial setting in England and a street scene in France are other stops along the way of our journey, which ends in Venice, Italy in 1755. A world map shows the route of the trip around the world, the distances between stops and the total miles traveled in the art tour of the world.
