Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Fans of Karen Katz will enjoy this new lift-the-flap book. Baby is looking for her new puppy and a close look at the cover gives the answer away. However, we go along with baby as she checks out her bed, but the lump is not the puppy; just her cat. Could puppy be behind the shower curtain? Lift the almost full-page-size flap and discover another of baby's pets. How about under the newspaper? Once again it is not her puppy, but just a bowl of goldfish. How about the garden, the trash can or perhaps the laundry basket? Success at last! Sharp-eyed young readers will notice that as baby continues her search her entourage grows. There is plenty to look at, name and count in this board book. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
Kirkus Reviews

A canine-centered hide-and-seek serves up another solid entry in Katz's celebration of babies.

Master of lift-the-flaps for little ones, Katz takes a curious tot, with her signature rounded shape and stylish clothes, and sends her on a mission to find a missing pup. A straightforward sentence is all that's needed—"Baby is looking for the new puppy"—and the child is quickly off on the hunt, lifting up newspapers or taking lids off trash cans in her search. Inviting questions elicit thoughtful musings. "Is the puppy behind the shower curtain? / No! / It's my pet turtle! / How did you get in here?" During fiveunsuccessful attempts, a lifted flap reveals a different animal in each location, and the babe's search party grows accordingly. Bold and bright, the flaps are not indestructible (but what flaps are?), and a gatefold opens to a fitting response in the sweetly expected conclusion.

Smiles all around for this winsome addition as a toddler teeters along her path to independence. (Board book. 6 mos.-2)
