Children's Literature - Lisa CzirrThe Starship Enterprise has boldly gone from the big screen to graphic novel format in this first part of an ongoing “IDW Star Trek” series. Featuring the portrayals from the 2009 film and based on a teleplay from the original television series, the action starts with a distress signal from a long-lost ship called the Valiant. The message is garbled but chilling, ending with the captain giving orders to self-destruct the ship. When the Enterprise runs into a force field soon after, the ship is damaged and many of the crew are harmed. Gary Mitchell suffers the most sinister fate, gaining strange new telekinetic and psychic powers as a result. He lashes out against the others, and it soon becomes clear that he poses a danger to the crew. Captain Kirk is faced with a distressing choice between abandoning or killing his friend. The story ends on a cliffhanger, which will entice readers into picking up the next installment. With a lot of bold, exciting color and action, the illustrations enhance the plot, with recognizable and expressive characters. Although relatively short in length, this graphic novel will be an enjoyable read for any young Star Trek fan. Reviewer: Lisa Czirr; Ages 8 to 12.
