Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
All summer the young narrator and his fishing buddy long to go "where the big fish are." They construct a sort of raft and figure out how to make it float, only to have it wrecked in a storm. But with determination and perseverance they triumphantly make it through the mangrove to the sea. Gustavson's long, textured, naturalistic, double-page oil paintings are filled with a sense of youthful vigor¾of energy waiting for release. The storm scenes do just that, then the calm is short-lived as the boys rebuild and launch the raft in a flurry of wavelets. The end shows them contentedly fishing, backed by an endless horizon. We can share their sense of satisfaction and admire their pluck, but still be concerned about the message their perhaps reckless behavior sends. 2001, Candlewick Press, $16.99. Ages 4 to 8. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-This plaintive tale of two friends always searching for the best way to find the "big" catch of fish is a homey piece of nostalgia. The two boys yearn to be out on the water fishing, instead of at the dock, and talk about building a raft. The narrator finally convinces his pal that they can do it. Railroad ties will work wonderfully for the platform. Old inner tubes will make it float. The boys are so excited about setting off that when the howling winds of a big storm damage the raft, they are devastated-until Bill works stubbornly to rebuild it. Gustavson's oil paintings delineate the differences between the two boys, their samenesses, their desire for real adventure, and the glorious feeling when they are actually "where the big fish are." This is a delightful read for those who thirst for adventure, and it would work splendidly in a storytime.-Kay Bowes, Concord Pike Library, Wilmington, DE Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

    Excellent Book

This is a perfect book to read to children. The story itself creates vivid mental images. The illustrations are detailed and fabulous. The writing or the pictures could stand alone and be great, but together they are perfection. My favorite line: 'I felt like a popped balloon'. This book does not encourage reckless behavior, it is about acting on your dreams instead of just wishing, and not letting any obstacle keep you from your goal. Though it's just the right length for a bedtime story, I highly recommend this book to any age.
