Overview

More than anything else, this is a book about love. In this deeply moving account, you will hear about Rambo, a sheep who informs the staff when another animal is in trouble; and Paulie, a former cockfighting rooster who eats lunch with humans; Dino, an old toothless pony who survived a fire; and many more. Alongside these horses,
roosters, pigs, sheep, rabbits, cows, and other animals is a staff of loving humans for whom every animal life, even that of a frog rushed to the vet for emergency surgery, has merit. Reading this book can profoundly—and joyously—change your life.

Meet the Author

Giving up a thriving eleven-year teaching career, Kathy Stevens bought a disastrously rundown farm on a vast number of acres, and with sheer determination, boundless compassion, and limited funds, turned it into an acclaimed haven for abused livestock, the Catskills Animal Sanctuary. Her books, Where the Blind Horse Sings and Animal Camp, present heartening stories of the difficult work that has gone into saving more than 1,100 lives since the sanctuary’s 2001 founding. Stevens lives in Saugerties, New York.

    Wonderful

What an amazing, lovely story. While many are aware of the plight of the standard dog and cat (of course we love them too), they are unaware of the horrors of factory farming. This book shows how quirky, fun, trusting, and adoring a cow, rooster, goat, and pig (and let's not forget the horse) can be. We need more large/farm animal rescue groups such as the one that Kathy Stevens started.

Had me on an emotional roller coaster!

This book had my emotions running hot and cold. I would smile and laugh at one moment and then be in tears another. The work these people are doing is just beyond words. Thank God there are people out there that have the privilege and means to do what they do. I read this book in one sitting.......I could NOT put it down. If you are an animal lover, please read this. After finishing the book, I was left with a good feeling...that so many of these creatures finally had a good, loving, caring environment. I could almost feel myself in the saddle on the horse and FEEL his joy at once again being able to run in the pasture. It was exhilarating!! Read it! I think you will come away with that good feeling, too.

You'll want to share it with everyone you know!

I read this book and promptly bought four more copies to give away. This book is going to be one of my staples for the holidays this year, because everyone who reads it falls in love with the main characters - the animals! I can't remember the last time a book that actually made me cry also left me with such a hopeful feeling.

May all beings, everywhere, be happy and free

It is impossible to read this book without feeling connected to each story. Ms. Stevens shares with us the life changing path that led to the creation of the Catskill Animal Sanctuary. It will make you smile, laugh out loud, shake your head in amazement and in the end ask of yourself, 'How can I help?' This book is about faith, trust, love and compassion for the most vulnerable of sentient beings. Ms. Steven's sensitivity to her mission in life and the staff that supports and enhances that mission runs thread-like through each vignette. A very well written, heart warming story.

This book is a real treat. Its' a delightful, heartwarming, yet thought-provoking read. I couldn't wait to get to the next story about the goat, the duck, the horse, the pig.... READ THIS BOOK! You will want to recommended to everyone you know, and you'll be compelled to think about how your food choices impact the lives of animals and our environment.

The account of a real life sanctuary and the wonderful creatures whose lives have been saved. Stevens has a real way with words and will certainly make one re-think the place of animals in this world, and perhaps change the attitudes of many.

    Heart-warming and fascinating!

I have found Kathy Stevens' account of her love for animals and the founding of a sanctuary for abandoned and neglected animals one of the most eloquently written and sensitive books that I have ever read! I knew Kathy as a child who grew up with horses and other animals, but never did I dream that this beautiful child would evolve into such a passionate advocate for all of God's creatures! Each animal that she tells about becomes a personality like no other and made me want to go out and purchase a pig, or a goat, or a turkey.....

This is a really wonderful book. It's written by the director of the Catskill Animal Sanctuary and is incredibly heartwarming and fun to read--all about the amazing animals who were rescued from various bad situations and have come to have wonderful lives on this farm. The animals really have their own personalities! There is a ram named Rambo who warns the owner when other animals are in trouble, and a blind horse named Buddy who had been condemned to death by his old owners but soon learned to gallop again. I LOVED this book.

Heart warming and uplifting...written with love

This is one of the most heartwarming books I have ever read. I had the good fortune to meet Kathy Stevens shortly after she opened her sanctuary, and I have supported her ever since. And I can tell you from personal experience, that she does kiss all the animals and sing to them. I also had the good fortune tomeet many of the animals that Kathy writes about, like Buddy, Samson, Rambo and others. This book describes what many of us already know..animals are intelligent and have feelings and emotions, Interspersed among the many uplifting stories are lessons on what farm animals have to endure and how they are slaughtered (the descriptions are not pretty, but unfortunately, that is the rality for these animals). Even with these lessons, this book is heartwarming and an absolute joy to read. I would recommend it everyone who loves animals and to everyone who doesn't or who doesn't understand animals. This book may well change the minds of those non-believers who unfortunately think animals have no feelings and therefore feel no pain...either physically or mentally.
