Overview

Roger was so mad, he hopped out of his bed and threw open the window. "I wish you'd carry Mom and Dad away, too!" he shouted into the wind.

What Roger didn't know was the four dastardly Wind brothers were just waiting to kidnap his parents. Now it's time for him and his sister, Sally, to quit bickering and embark on a rescue mission.

Their unbelievable adventure takes them through a world so fantastically strange that Roger must unlearn everything he's read in books. And if he and Sally don't figure out how to get along, they'll never get Mom and Dad back ... especially if that purple goo keeps following them.

Award-winning artist and author Dan Yaccarino's first illustrated novel for children is a fun-filled, contemporary fable about the strength of family no matter how great the odds.

Upset that his busy parents ignore him, Roger wishes they would be blown away, but then he and his irritable sister must endure a fantastic journey in order to find them.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-An odd, flat fantasy, populated with unlikable characters. Everything was fine in Roger's family-and then his father got a promotion. Now they live in a big house, his teenaged sister only wants to spend money at the mall, Mom is always on the phone with friends, and Dad is always talking business. These people are more than dysfunctional-they are unpleasant. Roger is fascinated with science, except that he is afraid of thunderstorms. When a storm arrives, he yells to the wind to take his parents away. Of course they vanish. Roger and his hateful sister go in search of them, find them being pushed around by the Four Winds, overpower the Winds, and return home to live happily ever after. Roger and Sally have many adventures with weather-related characters (a cloud child, Sir Snow, Lord Fog, etc.) but, again, none of them come to life. The boldly colored illustrations are realistic, yet stylized. If Sally had short hair and didn't wear a skirt, she would look exactly like Roger, and none of the weather characters' faces reflect the emotions described in the text.-Susan Lissim, Dwight School, New York City Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Picture-book veteran Yaccarino tries his hand at a longer form, with less-than-happy results. When a wish that a wild storm would take away his self-absorbed parents actually comes true, science-geek Roger and his ill-tempered, mall-rat big sister Sally set out to find them. Their search leads to brief encounters with the artificially folksy Sun as well as ethereal Rain and sealskin-clad Snow. They also get lessons in manners from Lord and Lady Fog, battle a monster made from household chemicals, and finally take on the unruly Wind brothers, who have forced their parents into servitude. Discovering that as long as all hold hands, the Winds can't blow them around, the family escapes, ferried home by friendly Clouds, and last met doing family things together in their yard. Combining wafer-thin characters, clumsy attempts at humor, a wandering plotline, and a severe case of explaining rather than showing that makes the opening chapter positively tedious, this labored, agenda-heavy effort isn't rescued even by its many small, quirky illustrations. (Fiction. 9-11)
