A 30-song collection of early and mid-'60s girl group rarities, some previously unreleased, from the vaults of the New York-based Scepter and Musicor labels. This is ephemera that can only be recommended to hard-bitten girl group fans, but if you're in that category there are probably enough goodies here to merit a spin. There's a rare 1962 cut by Tammy Montgomery, who became Tammi Terrell at Motown, and unreleased cuts by Maxine Brown, Goldie & the Gingerbreads, and Marie Knight. The songs by the Shirelles and the Shangri-Las, though not well known, have been easy to find on other compilations. As for the contributions by no names, these are often pleasant and well-produced but largely inconsequential; one bright spot is Ernestine Eady's perky "The Change," which has an uptown bounce typical of many quality New York soul-pop productions of the period.
