Overview

WHERE THE HEART IS, the soundtrack to the Natalie Portman film, is a light and pleasing collection of pop country tracks from both newcomers and familiar friends. The album opener, the uplifting "Shake My Soul" from Nashville songwriter Beth Nielsen Chapman, prepares the palate for the set with its pristine production and inspirational message. After a blues workout from Shannon Curfman and a lush ballad from stalwart Martina McBride, the meat of the disc arrives. Sometimes character actor Lyle Lovett serves up a beautiful, raw take on Ray Charles's classic "What'd I Say," complete with chewy organ backing. Emmylou Harris and Patty Griffin trade vocals on the haunting "Beyond the Blue." The track, featuring layered percussion and droning guitars, travels from country into the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows" territory. Newcomer Jennifer Day lends her impressive young voice to "Completely," and Lonestar kicks through the catchy shuffle ballad "Only You (And You Alone)." Toss in "Rowdy Booty Time," a Princely hip-hop track by Joan Osborne and Tommy Tims, and a number of other filling nuggets, and WHERE THE HEART IS satisfies. Karl Hagstrom Miller

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
The soundtrack to the emotionally moving film adaptation of Billie Letts' best-selling novel Where the Heart Is features an equally heartfelt collection of songs. John Hiatt's "Let It Slip Away," Martina McBride's "There You Are," the Corrs' "So Young," and the Warren Brothers and Sara Evans' "That's the Beat of a Heart" set the album's rootsy, poignant tone; Emmylou Harris and Patty Griffin's duet "Beyond the Blue" is another of the album's highlights. Tracks from Beth Nielsen Chapman, Shannon Curfman, Lyle Lovette, and Jennifer Day round out this worthwhile, sincere soundtrack.
