Billy, Old Dan and Little Ann — a Boy and His Two Dogs...

A loving threesome, they ranged the dark hills and river bottoms of Cherokee country. Old Dan had the brawn, Little Ann had the brains — and Billy had the will to train them to be the finest hunting team in the valley. Glory and victory were coming to them, but sadness waited too. And close by was the strange and wonderful power that's only found...

An exciting tale of love and adventure you'll never forget.

A young boy living in the Ozarks achieves his heart's desire when he becomes the owner of two redbone hounds and teaches them to be champion hunters.

Meet the Author

Wilson Rawls grew up on a small farm in the Ozark Mountains of Oklahoma. There were no schools where he lived so his mother taught Rawls and his sisters how to read and write. He says that reading the book The Call of the Wild changed his life and gave him the notion that he would like to grow up to write a book like it. He shared his dream with his father, and his father gave him the encouraging advice, "Son, a man can do anything he sets out to do, if he doesn't give up." Rawls never forgot his father's words, and went on to create two novels about his boyhood that have become modern classics.

    This book is wonderful

This book was wonderful. I read it for the first time in third grade as a lonely third grader who had recently moved from another state. I already had a dog but I wanted one of my own afterwards. In fourth grade I got a new miniature schnauzer puppy and named her Little Ann after the dog in this book. My Little Ann died 2 novembers ago at 15 years old. I was cleaning out some of my childhood books and recently found my old copy and reread it with my sister. It made us both cry, but we still love it.

Where the Red Fern Grows: A Breath-Taking Book

Where the Red Fern Grows is an amazing book about a boy named Billy who lives in the little town of Ozarks. There he works very hard to buy two red bone hounds. The two dogs, Old Dan and Little Ann, seem to be able to always understand Billy and the three are inseparable. Billy trains his dogs to hunt, and they become an incredible team. Throughout the story they face many challenges in competitions, bets, and much more. This book was so intriguing. I had always heard of this book, but never took the time to read it. I'm so glad I chose to read this book. It shows the devotion of two dogs to each other and to their master. I would warn parents that this book contains some blood, so the child should be at least about third or fourth grade. Other than that, I think anyone who reads this book will fall in love with the characters and the touching plot. Throughout this book I laughed and even cried. The description is amazing and will take your breathe away.

    I Also Recommend:

    For the animal enthusiast

Any animal enthusiast will find this heart wrenching novel an absolute pleasure as Billy's attachment to his dogs, and their fondness of each other. Unquestionably will resonate with all pet owners.
This book offers the extra benefit of providing inspiring examples of virtuous human qualities. Billy shows his adherence to personal accountability via the manner that he finds the money himself to purchase his hounds; a feat not easily accomplished by a child. Billy also exemplifies his absolute devotion to his family and dogs matched only by the loyalty echoed to him from his dogs.
You will find this book will be a very satisfying ordeal from Billy's acquisition of the pups to their saddening yet revealing conclusion regarding the red fern. I highly recommend this book to animal lovers of all ages and to those looking for meaningful excursion into the potent power of affection among humans and animals.

    What a terrible book!

I had to read this for school and i absolutely hated it. The whole thing promotes needless killing, carnage, and brutality upon animals. The entire story's premise is about a young boy, his dogs, and his love for harming animals. He forces the dogs he buys to hunt and murder raccoons. Also, there is a disturbing scene where a teenager tries to kill two puppies with an axe, only to trip and get himself killed gorily and graphically. The views expressed by Wilson Rawls are dated and sexist, as Billy's mother is stereotyped as overprotective and emotional. Did you ever notice that his sisters have no names mentioned, and men are stereotyped as stupid and overly violent? In short, I do not think that anyone should read a book that promotes such cruelty.

What a heartwarming story for all ages!

I have never read a novel quite like this one. Where the Red Fern Grows is the most emphantic story that is out there.

A mature novel of a relationship between a boy and his two loving hunting hounds. Encounter the stories of two angels and a boy in the flinty ozark mts.

Five stars, please read. I promise a story full of faith and happy tears!
    Truly, heartwarming.

What a Waste of Toilet Paper!

The WORST book EVER written. Where do I begin? That stupid pathetic brat of a child cries in every freaking scene. He teaches his dogs to rip animals apart because the worthless hick enjoys it. The overall writing style was weak. The characters are flat and really, really pathetic. Oh, and you can't forget that classic scene where the redneck father beats a raccoon until it dies and has the gall to go on about being "fair." If you're going to hunt, it needs to actually be a HUNT. You wouldn't beat your child until they died, now would you?

Hunters and non-hunters alike will wish they'd never ever had to read this bile. I would not recommend this filth to my very worst enemy.

What a waste of toilet paper. My bum would really have enjoyed that too. What a horrid, inexcusable waste of time and good toilet paper.

    HORRIBLE!!

I think this book was horrible. I read this book for school and it took me forever to finish the end because it's so sad. The book describes the deaths too much. I would have never finished this book if it wasn't for a grade.

    Worst Book Ever

I had to read this book in class when I was in 5th grade. I hated every word in it. It was boring, and sad at the same time. I hated the ending. It made me cry and I NEVER cry about books. I hated the whole idea of the book. I hated how killing racoons was popular. No one should ever have to read it.
