Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Suzanne Javid
Where is Boo hiding? Is he behind the jack-o-lantern? Is he behind the cookie jar? In this board book, a cute black cat with a flocked velvety face engages the reader in a Halloween guessing game. The author, known for her creative book covers involving flaps, sparkles, and die-cut shapes, uses a cutaway front cover on this title. With rounded edges and thick board stock, this is an ideal book for babies to hold and mouth. Eight double-page spreads have a total of 44 words; no more than six words are included on any page. Large and larger fonts make this an ideal hide-and-seek book for babies and toddlers. Halloween colors of orange, black, and green make the pages visually attractive to young readers. Readers search for Boo among bright and colorful Halloween objects. The repetitive words and phrases introduce young children to vocabulary and holiday objects such as a jack-o-lantern, candle, ghost, bat, cookies, spider, witch’s hat, broom, door, and trick-or-treaters. Images of Boo on the front cover and his tail on each page lead to a surprise on the very last page—Boo dressed in his best Halloween regalia. Simple, colorful, and fun, this is a good addition to personal or school libraries. Reviewer: Suzanne Javid; Ages 0 to 3.
