Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Carolyn Crimi's tale is told from the perspective of a child mummy who is lost in the wilds of a land described only as "a deep, dark place." This is an interesting peek into an imagined world of monster childhood, and being lost and scared without your mom is also a very common childhood experience. Crimi handles it well, with sincere language, and we cannot help but laugh when the monster that finally turns out to scare Baby Mummy—after he encounters a skeleton, an amorphous blob, and a vampire—is a mouse! The illustrations are fun and expressive and have some cool particulars—such as the skeleton's boxer shorts with a dice pattern—but could occasionally have used more detail to engage the wonder of readers. The shore of a swamp for example takes up almost two pages and is just grass, and a graveyard Baby Mummy stumbles upon is just a grouping of similar graves. This curious tale of a young mummy lost in a world of monsters preparing for bed will make kids laugh and ultimately feel happy at Baby Mummy's return home. Reviewer: Brendan Frost

PreS-Gr 1

Little Baby Mummy does not want to go to bed. Demanding one more game of "Hide and Shriek," he runs outside to conceal himself in the graveyard, but Mama Mummy doesn't join him. Like the young bird in P. D. Eastman's Are You My Mother? (Random, 1960), he sets off to find her, heading into "the deep, dark woods, the spookery woods" and encountering several creepy creatures: "Clank clink clank/Woo boo woo/Clank clink cloo/'Mama Mummy, is that you?'/But out of the woods clanked-/Bones!" This skeleton, as well as a blob and a vampire-all making their nighttime preparations-greet the mummy and tell him to go to bed. The only time the youngster is truly frightened-by a mouse-his mother is there to comfort him, take him home, and tuck him into bed. The gouache paintings depict the action with humor, and the eerie details and nighttime hues create just the right mood. Well-placed page turns add a bit of suspense. A reassuring offering for youngsters who want just a touch of the shivers.-Kathleen Whalin, York Public Library, ME

Kirkus Reviews
"Just one more game of Hide and Shriek?" begs Little Baby Mummy of his Big Mama Mummy. She relents, Baby hides-but then he gets bored, and goes to look for his mother. One by one, enriched by sound effects, he finds Bones, Glob and Drac in the midst of their bedtime ablutions, who all warn him against the scary creatures of "deep, dark night." Then-"Help, Mama Mummy! I'm scared!"-his mother finds him just in time to rescue him from a mouse and put him to bed. Manders's appealingly round mummy child and the text's rhythmic "clank clink clanks" will find happy audiences. (Picture book. 3-6)

    Adorable

My 4 year old daughter loves this book. We have read it together so many times that she can tell me the story by looking at the pictures. It's fun making up different voices for the different "people" the Little Baby Mummy runs into while searching for Big Momma Mummy (say that 5 times fast ;0) At first the people seem a little scary but when you see how they prepare for bed and that they are in their jammies, they aren't so scary after that, more like silly. I recommend this book!!

WHERE'S MY MUMMY? is the perfect book for the Halloween season.

Baby Mummy, like any small child, doesn't want to go to bed. He asks his Big Mama Mummy for one more game of Hide and Shriek. So while his mama counts, he goes off to hide.

Baby Mummy starts off his game in the cemetery, only to have a visitor come out and tell him to go to bed. Saying he's not scared, he ventures off into other scary places. Baby Mummy meets a variety of scary creatures (perfect for Halloween) without showing any fear.

It's only when the most un-scary creature crosses his path does Baby Mummy call out in fear for his mummy.

WHERE'S MY MUMMY? is a treat for all ages. Most kids will do what they can to get a few more minutes of staying up. Baby Mummy is no exception. The scary folk he encounters during his game of Hide and Shriek are far from scary. The story will entertain children of all ages. With repetitive words through each adventure, small children will be shouting out the phrases in no time!

My 8-year-old son read the story to me with many chuckles along the way, and then my 5-year-old daughter caught on to the repeating words early on to help finish the story. Pick up WHERE'S MY MUMMY? for a frightfully fun read!
