A big adventure about one of life's small mysteries: Where in the world is that missing sock?! Tongue-twisting text by best-selling author Dunbar and vivid pictures by award-winning artist Rescek.

Pippin is as mad as can be. "I can't find my other sock!" he exclaims. "My yellow sock with clocks, just like the one I am wearing!" Where do those maddening missing socks go? Pippin is determined to find out. Together with his friend Tog, he embarks on the greatest sock search ever.

Laundry baskets! Wastebaskets! Fruit baskets? No drawer is left unturned. From a mountaintop of socks, through a maze of mismatched knits, to a gatefold clothesline showcasing cheerful argyles, stripes, and dots, WHERE'S MY SOCK? bursts with colorful footwear for kids to look for, count, and pair.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Pippin is mad. He has decided to wear his yellow socks with clocks, but he can only find one. A sympathetic friend, Tog, offers to help Pippin find the sock mate he desires. They begin with the sock drawer. Many colorful socks come flying out, but none match the yellow sock with clocks. Perhaps the missing sock is in the handkerchief drawer? The sweater drawer? The bits-and-bobs drawer? No luck. Then Pippin empties the laundry basket, the ironing basket, the trash basket, and the fruit basket. Still no luck. The friends wail in despair as they contemplate the fate of poor lost socks. Then they continue their search. Finally they have a huge pile of socks. They decide to match up those that have mates. A large foldout picture shows the pairs of socks hanging together on a long clothesline. Tog decides to cheer Pippin up by offering to wear odd socks, too. He pulls off his boots and the friends have a big surprise! The large colorful pictures feature socks of many sizes, shapes, colors, and designs. Pippin is a blue, pink, and orange mouse, while Tog appears as a lavender and orange cat. A fun book to share with young children. 2006, Scholastic, Ages 3 to 7.

School Library Journal
PreS-K-Pippin, a young mouse, can't find one of his yellow socks with the clocks on it anywhere, so Tog, a cat, steps in to help. They turn up socks stuffed in shoes, left in washing machines, and lost behind furniture. They pair them all up but the misplaced yellow one is still not to be found. Finally the friends agree to wear mismatched socks. When Pippin helps Tog take off his boots, they discover that Tog was wearing the missing sock all along. Dunbar tells this story in dialogue and in simple, fluid prose. However, while Rescek's watercolors have a sweet and tender tone, the page spreads are overly colorful and busy. The characters, like the socks, are colored in blue, pink, or yellow patterns, and often get lost on the page. Still, hunting for the missing sock is an experience all children can relate to and they might enjoy the mystery with its surprising twist.-Rachel G. Payne, Brooklyn Public Library, NY Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
In an endearing tale of socks lost and found, Pippin's lost sock makes him very angry; none but the matching yellow sock with clocks on it will do. So, he and his pal Tog set out to find the stray. Along the way, the two ponder all the sad, lost socks there are in the world: "All the odd socks. Socks with holes in the toes. Socks that nobody wants to know." The duo teams up to find as many of these sad socks as they can, and ends up with a huge pile culled from under cushions, inside washing machines and stuffed in shoes. With the help of a four-page foldout laundry line they find matches for ones with stripes, ones with polka dots, short ones and long ones, but none that are yellow with clocks. When the pals decide that the only thing to do is to wear odd socks, Tog finds he already is-and guess what one of them looks like! Rescek's brightly hued illustrations are a delight-Pippin and Tog are adorably fuzzy and just as colorful as their socks. Young readers will marvel at the sheer number of different patterns on the socks and enjoy matching them. A great tale of determination and creative problem-solving. (Picture book. 4-8)
