A perfect charmer for younger readers, this sprightly seek-and-find story features a tuneful rhyme, artfully silly characters and scenes-and a fold-up tip-top surprise!

A circus clown's search for his partner leads him to the top of an acrobatic pyramid, found by unfolding the book's final page.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In Where's Pup? by Dayle Ann Dodds, illus. by Pierre Pratt, a clown's search for his pet in and around the Big Top offers a lesson in vowels via rhyming couplets. In response to the titular question, a magician responds, "Don't know./ Go ask Jo./ She's feeding Mo." Readers discover in the next spread that Mo is a monkey, and Jo doesn't know Pup's whereabouts, either. ("Can't say./ Go ask Ray./ He's washing Kay," an elephant.) A final foldout page that more than doubles the paper-over-board book in height reveals Pup at the top of a human pyramid in the center ring. Saturated golds, reds and royal blues help to evoke the magic of the circus. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
An odd-looking clown asks the title question as he searches the circus, encountering different performers as he goes. Each answer he receives is a brief, singsong rhyme that sends him to someone else. "Don't know. Go ask Jo. She's feeding Mo." (the gorilla) "Can't say. Go ask Ray. He's washing Kay." (the elephant) When he finally gives up, he looks up, and up, and up. A neat fold-up shows us the proud, happy pup at the top of a human pyramid. Pratt starts the visual narrative on the end-papers with the circus tent, which we enter on the title page. The double-page acrylic paintings include just enough contextual details to describe the assorted circus acts. There is a gentle absurdity to the almost cartoon-y pictures. The gorilla wears a tiny hat and a polka-dot bib, while a pig in goggles and a helmet is readied to be shot from a cannon. The catchy text along with the pictures should elicit many smiles when read aloud. 2003, Dial Books for Young Readers/Penguin Putnam,
— Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
School Library Journal
PreS-K-A tiny clown queries the various circus performers about his missing pet, whose whereabouts will surprise and delight readers. Vibrant and theatrical, the art says it all in this dynamic adventure under the big top. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Keeping lines to four words or less but with vocabulary that will challenge emergent readers, Dodds (The Kettles Get New Clothes, 2002, etc.) sends a clown across circus grounds in search of an errant puppy. Using a bright red-orange color scheme with occasional flashes of deep blue, Pratt (No, No, Jack!, 2002, etc.) depicts the diminutive searcher questioning a succession of busy acrobats and animal tenders: "Hi there, Jess! Hi there, Bess! Where's Pup?" "Can't see. Go ask Lee. He's launching Dee." Finally the quest ends: "Can't find Pup? Just look up"-at a page that unfolds . . . and unfolds . . . and unfolds again to reveal a human pyramid with the smiling stray at the very top. Fans of P.D. Eastman's Are You My Mother? (1960), Eric Hill's Where's Spot? (1980), and a plethora of similar hide-and-seek variants will welcome this fresh addition to the genre, particularly for its crowd-pleasing climax. Great book!

Both my 5 year old and 2 year old boys adore this book. The older one has it memorized and actually recites it throughout the house. I love the illustrations...and can't get over how the little clown resembles Woody Allen. The last picture in the book says it all. We give it as a gift all of the time!

    2-yr old loves this book!

My 2-yr old son loves this book! He likes the rhymes and responding to the questions. His favorite part is the end where we finally find pup - you lift the page up, and up, and up.

    Contractions aren't for 5K!

My son was given this book by his AR teacher in 5K. He is an excellent reader, but was frustrated by the contractions in this story. Why would an author of a children's book use a fictious word as 'Hiya'? Explain that to a 6 year old. The names rhyming was a good idea, but most of the names were highly rare. If a parent were to read this to a child, it is a wonderful book, with a fun story line and awesome colors, but for a beginning-beginning reader, I think it's too confusing.
