Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The "Tilly and Friends" series is all about small Tilly—presumably English, since Dunbar lives in Brighton—and her five delicious friends who, indeed, come in ice cream colors, but are never cloying. Each is featured in a book of his or her own and this time it is Tumpty's turn. The blueberry-colored elephant is by far the largest of the friends, which leads to the simple but funny conceit that he believes by closing his eyes, he becomes invisible. As Tilly and the others (vanilla rabbit, strawberry pig, butterscotch hen, and toothy lime-colored alligator) fall about laughing at Tumpty's silly attempts to hide in plain sight, they suddenly stop: "Where's Tumpty?" The youngest listeners and browsers will have great fun following the friends as they hunt everywhere for Tumpty (and munch on cookies). Just in time to prevent general tears, Tumpty pops up from behind the sofa, saves the day, and finishes all the cookies. What a simple, but elegant tale! The whimsical illustrations, done in ink and pastel colors (and red) with some collage for patterned surfaces, couldn't be more perfect—full of amusing details, expressive faces, and the funniest antics. Enchanted readers may choose a favorite (I vote for the alligator, Doodle!), but will probably insist on finding all the books in the series. Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft

PreS-Gr 1

After several unsuccessful attempts at hiding, Tumpty the elephant is able to trick his friends into thinking he has disappeared. They search the house high and low, and he finally appears after being enticed by cookies and declarations of concern. There are many amusing situations involving Tilly, a little girl, and her animal friends. The characters appear in the prologue in the yellow house they share and are introduced one by one in the following scenes. Not all of the action takes place in the foreground. There is a doorway in the top corner that the animals peek in and out of. It also serves as a foreshadowing device. Text is placed above the character that is speaking and is a larger size. The background consists of a variety of muted tones, which contrast with the brighter mixed-media drawings. The illustrations are whimsical and detailed. Most of the characters have rosy cheeks and wear different patterns, and their emotions are readily apparent. At one point, the pig laughs so hard he is crying, and the chicken falls on her back in a fit of giggles. Tumpty is comedic without realizing it. His antics are similar to those in Mo Willems's "Elephant & Piggie" series (Hyperion). Young children and beginning readers are sure to gravitate to this delightful story that celebrates the joy of friendship.-Lori A. Guenthner, Baltimore County Public Library, Randallstown, MD

    I Also Recommend:

An underrated gem of a series

This series is THE PERFECT read for children in the 2-3 year-old age range. Although they may appear simplistic, they are actually masterpieces of subtlety and great design. Tilly's world perfectly captures the toddler zeitgeist where small moments comprise the entire universe, and where each interaction can become a moral milestone. This book is particularly good at explaining how one person's joke may be another person's hurt feelings. We use these books everyday with our three year-old to frame ideas like friendship, fairness, feelings, and kindness. We have given the whole set to our daughter's preschool, and my husband uses them all year in his junior kindergarten classroom. I can't recommend them highly enough.
