Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Handford takes the concept of hidden pictures one notch higher with the chaotic, character-filled drawings that populate his highly-popular series. In this installment, readers join Waldo on his journey to find 12 scrolls that will reveal a truth about him. In each scene, readers must search not only for Waldo, but also for Wenda, Wizard Whitebeard, Odlaw, Woof the dog (or, rather, his tail), and a scroll. Next, they need to find Waldo’s key, Woof’s bone, Wenda’s camera, and Odlaw’s binoculars. If that is not enough searching, there are 25 Waldo-Watchers to be found, each of whom appears only once in the book. And there is another character, too, who is not shown in the introduction but who appears once in every picture except the last. Finally, checklists at the end of the book ask readers to go back and find hundreds of additional objects. Everything readers must search for is hidden in plain sight, but with every inch of each two-page spread covered with tiny drawings, they can be extremely hard to find. A great book for honing observation skills, it provides hours of fun for readers of all ages. Reviewer: Pat Trattles

Young and old have enjoyed trying to find Waldo and his candy cane striped hat in previous selections. But in this installment, Waldo fans have the additional challenge of following him on a journey to find 12 scrolls, which will unearth more information on him. True to form, the large sized pages continually challenge readers in trying to find in plain sight other characters despite all the diminutive drawings interspersed in two pages. Some of the additional characters to discover in the pages are: Wenda, Wizard Whitebeard, Odlaw, Woof the dog (or, rather, his tail), a scroll, Waldo's key, Woof's bone, Wenda's camera, and Odlaw's binoculars. On each of the journeys, a checklist on each of the characters and items is provided to check off as found by the readers. To add to the fun, readers will need to find 25 Waldo watchers along the journeys. Patience, determination, and a keen set of eyes will take readers on this trip with Waldo. This installment will continue to engage readers of all ages. Reviewer: Rosa Roberts

Meet the Author

Martin Handford, the man behind the mind-boggling Waldo books, began his career as a freelance illustrator specializing in drawing crowd scenes. "I can’t tell you how pleased I am that Waldo has taken on a life of his own," he says. "I’d like to inspire children to open their minds to explore subjects more, to be aware of what’s going on around them. I’d like them to see wonder in places that may not have occurred to them." Martin Handford lives in England.

Not much of a review required for this Where's Waldo classic. It's just as fun as when I was a kid, only in an oversize paperback. For extra challenge, The Fantastic Journey allows you to search for 4 additional characters plus some items on each page. In true Where's Waldo form, the drawings are engaging and full of funny action. Because it's a paperback, I'm not worried about kids "loving" it to ruin. Good for a rainy afternoon.
