Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Sixteen-year-old Ellie Wrigley is desperate to find her unconventional, beloved older sister, Nina, who disappeared two years ago, seemingly without a trace. When Ellie uncovers a clue in a local secondhand shop-a drawing that Ellie recognizes as Nina's work-she is determined to investigate, even without her family's support. Ellie's father left years earlier, and her mother is remarkably uninvolved: "Your sister's not missing," Ellie's mother has told her. "She's just not here." Without telling anyone where she is going, Ellie sets off on a cross-country chase with her new crush, Sean, who has also lost a sibling, and seems to be the only one who understands her. The cast of convenient characters also includes Ellie's gay boss at the coffee bar and her suspicious best friend. The story is largely unbelievable, however, debut author Weingarten's fast-paced, chatty style will keep readers tuned in. Ages 14-up. (Feb.)

Children's Literature
This debut novel aspires to be a shocker, though some readers and parents may be shocked right at the outset by the flow of profanity and the total absence of parental involvement in the lives of the novel's teen characters. Sixteen-year-old Ellie is grieving for her sister Nina, who disappeared two years ago from their Chicago suburb. She is rash enough to set out with Sean, a "hot" boy she has barely met, on a quest to find Nina, which ultimately leads to San Francisco. Ellie's best friend, Amanda, warns her that Sean may not be what he seems, though her gay co-worker Brad encourages naive Ellie to find romance. Clue after clue unfolds, providing anxiety and provoking disbelief. Why does no one ever think of notifying the police until the improbable end, which brings relief, but raises even more questions in the minds of readers? Weingarten strains to provide some bizarre atmosphere—the crazed demolition and burning of an old mansion, a hip tattoo parlor in Nebraska, a rock concert in Arizona's desert—while Ellie's first-person agonies will probably keep lovers of romance engaged as the author unravels the mystery and brings everyone together in a blissful ending. Even dowdy Mom turns out to be beautiful! Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft
School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—Ellie's beloved, artistic, and wild older sister disappeared two years ago. By chance, Ellie finds one of Nina's drawings in a donation box at a thrift store, and with the help of her friend Amanda, who works there, she tracks down the guy who donated the box, leading her on a chase all over the country to find her missing sister. At a party in town, she meets Sean, a guy from a local prep school who thinks fate brought them together. His brother died a few years ago, and he'd do anything to get him back, so he relates to Ellie, and the next thing they know they're driving from their suburb in Illinois to Nebraska, Colorado, and California, following clues. An unbelievable plot—Ellie's mom doesn't care that her daughter is missing for days, Amanda lets her friend run off with a complete stranger, and Nina has made no effort to contact her family despite the ability to do so with the help of police and the Internet—combined with sloppy writing—makes this one hard to recommend, despite the intriguing premise. The story takes an abrupt turn toward a Lifetime movie when Ellie figures out that Sean murdered his brother, who was, in fact, Nina's boyfriend, and that he plans to murder both her and Nina. This road-trip novel pales in comparison to John Green's Paper Towns (Dutton, 2008).—Jennifer Barnes, Homewood Library, IL
Kirkus Reviews
In this gripping debut novel, a compulsive cross-country quest for her missing older sister leads 16-year-old Ellie to the terrifying truth. After her artistic sister Nina's inexplicable disappearance two years ago, Ellie still clings to the hope of finding her. When she stumbles on one of Nina's drawings with a phone number in a vintage shop, Ellie automatically assumes this is a sign. "Fate" connects her with the elusive and enabling Sean, and the impulsive couple pursue Nina's bread-crumb trail of clues from Chicago to a Nevada diner, a Denver tattoo parlor, an Arizona rock concert and eventually San Francisco. Ellie's colloquial first-person, present-tense narration, accented with flashbacks about Nina, reveals her naive but dogged determination and her growing romantic attraction to the increasingly possessive Sean. As she moves closer to Sean and the truth, Ellie and readers simultaneously unravel the bizarre clues that culminate in a shocking finale. Sibling loyalty, quirky characters, misplaced trust and the very questionable kindness of a stranger guarantee a riveting read. (Mystery. 14 & up)

Wherever Nina Lies by Lynn Weingarten

My thoughts: This book was nothing I expected. I put off reading it for so long because I thought it was going to be similar to The Clique or Gossip Girl, but with a twist. I was so wrong. At first, I hated the cover of Wherever Nina Lies; I thought it was completely wrong for the story. But now, I love it. I like how the lettering matches Nina's personality and how the cover model is holding a finger to her face, like she is keeping the secret of what happened to Nina.
Ellie's older sister has been missing for two years now, and although everyone is telling her to move on, she can't. This is her only sister. The only one she has shared memories with, the only one she admired, and the only one she will ever have. So when the chance comes for her to go looking for Nina, she grabs it tightly and doesn't let go.
Lynn wrote Wherever Nina Lies in such a way that it had me addicted. I loved how her words influenced what you thought was going to happen. I felt as if I was Ellie, and I realized a few things with her that would have been obvious if I wasn't so dragged into Ellie's character. Lynn worked in all the events and clues leading to the truth about what happened to Nina wonderfully. There were some flaws in the plot, like how Ellie agreed to drive across the country with a guy she barley knew, but I found they were easy to forget.
Wherever Nina Lies was definitely worth reading. I love Lynn's writing style, and I will be looking forward to her next book.

    This book was awesome!!

This book is about a girl whose sister has been missing for 2 years and one day she decides to just go out and look for her. She's the only one in her family that still has hope that her sister is still alive, so she takes action. She goes on a roadtrip with a cute guy she met at a party looking for clues as to what happened to her sister. As these clues lead her closer and closer to the mystery of what happened to Nina, she finds out something that changes everything for her. It is DEFINITELY worth reading, especially with the big twist at the end. It's a book you won't forget.

Have YOU read this?! You so definetley should!

I love this book. I just finished reading it right this second and i like the ending! The book was surprising at times but at the same time understandable and emotional. It's an unforgetable story about a girl trying to find her sister who disappeared for no reason one day. While trying to find her sister more problems come up and you start to feel what the characters are feeling. An amazing book especially for a first book. Read it and you won't regret it.

Nina mysteriously left two years ago, and now her younger sister, Ellie, is searching for her lost sister. Even though Ellie's good friends, Amanda and Brad, say she should just give up, Ellie simply can't. This is her only sister. She can't go on through life without knowing what happened to Nina.

So, after Ellie sees a drawing her sister did and a phone number on a piece of old cardboard, she starts hunting for Nina.

Early on, Ellie meets the nice guy, Sean, who agrees to help a total stranger find her long-lost sister. The two travel cross-country, following clue after clue, in order to find Nina. Only when her search winds to an end does everything spin out of control.

Is Sean really there to help her? Or does he have an ulterior motive? And what's the true story with Nina? Will Ellie ever be able to find her sister...alive?

Lynn Weingarten writes a thrilling adventure of two teens traveling across the country in order to find a long-lost sibling. This book is full of humor, adventure, love, and devotion. The author creates a palpable love between two sisters that jumps from the pages of this book.

Whether you have siblings or not, WHEREVER NINA LIES will be sure to grab all readers.

    I <3 this book!

This book was amazing!! The plot line was unexpected and surprising. The characters were hilarious (especially Brad!). The one thing I don't like about this book is ... there are a couple disgusting parts. I still love it though. I would recommend it to anyone - especially sisters- who like a good mystery and an over-all good book!

I read this book over the summer as an easy side read for sittin

I read this book over the summer as an easy side read for sitting by the pool. I was originally drawn to it because it was somewhat short, and had an interesting cover. However, I didn't have too high of hopes for it. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised! I thought it was an excellent book! The author has a very Sarah Dessen feel to her writing. I also loved the drawings in it, they really gave a nice touch.I felt that the book was the perfect length, not to long and not to short. Kept me on my feet and had a few good twists to it. At times I actually felt like I was in the book. I grew very attached to the characters, and was sad when the book was over.Great summer read!

a unique voice and a tight plot

Ellie's sister Nina disappeared two years ago.

Ellie isn't sure who she is or what her life is supposed to be now that she doesn't have her sister. Beautiful, artistic and a little wild, Nina is everything Ellie could want in an older sister. Ellie can only imagine what it must be like to be that kind of person.

Until Nina is gone. Then Ellie just wants her back. Even if two years later that is seeming less and less likely.

When Ellie finds a drawing that can only have been done by her sister, Ellie knows it's a sign. Nina is out there somewhere and this is Ellie's chance to make everything right. If she can follow the clues surely she can find Nina wherever she is and bring her home.

With the help of her mysterious crush, Ellie sets off on a road trip following Nina's trail. Along the way she'll meet some unlikely misfits and realize that she might be more like her sister than she thought in ¿Wherever Nina Lies¿ (2009) by Lynn Weingarten.

¿Wherever Nina Lies¿ is Weingarten's first novel. (She has since followed up with the off beat fantasy ¿The Secret Sisterhood of Heartbreakers¿.)

¿Wherever Nina Lies¿ is a fast-paced mystery that takes readers across the country and on an emotional roller coaster as Ellie unravels the truth about Nina's disappearance. Weingarten weaves a masterful mystery filled with so many twists and unexpected turns that even when I skimmed ahead I was completely floored by the shocking finish.

In addition to a thrilling, satisfying mystery ¿Wherever Nina Lies¿ is filled with clever characters and exotic locations that bring Ellie's journey to life. Flashbacks interspersed throughout Ellie's search add a second dimension to the story as readers get a glimpse of the relationship Ellie and Nina shared as well as Ellie's regrets when it comes to her sister.

With a unique voice and a tight plot, ¿Wherever Nina Lies¿ is a must read for readers who like a bit of suspense with their road trip adventures.

Possible Pairings: ¿Frost¿ by Marianna Baer, The Vast Fields of Ordinary by Nick Burd, Clarity by Kim Harrington, Liar by Justine Larbalestier, Imaginary Girls by Nova Ren Suma, ¿How to Save a Life¿ by Sara Zarr

I had first seen this book in the Barnes & Noble store, and

I had first seen this book in the Barnes & Noble store, and was immediately attracted to the cover. Things just continued on even better when I read the synopsis.
This story is mysterious and enchanting, you'll fall in love with some of the characters, and you will be shocked at the end results of this book. I felt like I was Ellie, I totally fell for the cute guy in the story, and could feel Ellie's pain for missing her sister. The whole journey is fun, and I actually screamed and teared up a little at the end of the book.
I loved it and I will definitely be looking at more of Weingarten's work. :)

    Not a compelling journey

I thought was going to be a more serious/darker version of 10 Little Blue Envelopes. Dark, yes, I suppose - in a completely unrealistic, overdone way. Ridiculous "clues" and ever more clumsy travelogue and a climax that out soaps the worst day time television.
