All Music Guide - Jared Johnson
Adam McInnis is no stranger to the competitive music world. He first caught the national spotlight by beating out 30,000 other contestants to join the 11-person ensemble The One: Making of a Music Star. He then won Score, Jon Simpson's songwriting competition. These successes punctuate McInnis' infectiously optimistic debut on High Wire Records. His thick, mature vocals make him at times a dead ringer for Peter Gabriel, but his writing style is more akin to Jeffrey Gaines or Ben Harper, with a little of the Wallflowers thrown in as well. This is the kind of debut that bends lines and breaks down walls to prove that great music is just great music, regardless of the genre. Ironically, the title track is the least representative of McInnis' talents and style, even though it was chosen as the lead single. If that's all you have heard from this up-and-comer, you may be surprised to hear that the remainder of the disc offers one of the freshest, most alluring new takes on soul music in more than a decade.
