Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
As a child frolics in a magical version of the natural world, the narrator coos her enduring parental love: "I wanted you more/ than you ever will know,/so I sent love to follow/ wherever I go." The child, of neutral ethnicity and indeterminate gender (thanks to an orange bucket hat and compositions that always show him or her in profile or from behind) is one lucky kid: there's a piggyback ride on a hippo, apple-picking with the help of an albino giraffe, a park bench chat with pandas, and a snooze that literally entails lying down with the lambs. Tillman's (On the Night You Were Born) digital artwork teeters of the edge of saccharine, and she's too fond of dancing blobs of lights. But she has an unerring instinct for dramatic composition--in these pages, readers get the sense of spying on a secret world--and her potent combination of unapologetic sentiment, fantasy, photorealism, and painterliness has an undeniable allure. As with her other books, the real audience is probably grownups looking for a misty-eyed interlude. Ages 4-8. (Sept.)
Children's Literature
Realize the strength of love and how it is able to go anywhere. In the illustrations, a trail of stars represents love that follows the young child with the red hat. The star-like magic of love accompanies the child's fanciful adventures. The young child interacts with a variety of animals. The starry trail of love follows closely whether the child dances with a bear in a field, rides on a hippopotamus across the water, plays with rabbits in a snowy grove, or rests with sheep in the shade of the trees. The simplicity of the illustrations work well with the verses that describe the power of love and how it is always near no matter where one is. Those children who enjoyed Tillman's previous book, On the Night You Were Born, will probably enjoy the lyrical words and enchanting illustrations of this book, too. A wonderful book to share with children to let them know they are always loved. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
Kirkus Reviews
Parents and grandparents with a sweet tooth will likely lap up the latest in Tillman's string of sentimental favorites. Couched in a series of breathless phrases and exhortations, the (presumably) parent's adoration of the child is expressed ad nauseum, accompanied by a series of slightly surreal illustrations. A swirl of white stars represents the parent's love. The child, whose face is always shrouded or turned away, is accompanied in each illustration by one or more animals pictured in photorealistic detail. The contrast with the softer, generally pastoral backgrounds is surprisingly pleasing if utterly inexplicable. Young listeners may wonder just why the child is frolicking in the water with a pair of hippos or playing in the surf with two small purple pachyderms, but the paintings are probably pretty enough to distract them. The text, unfortunately, has no such saving grace, and the abstract descriptions will do little to capture young listeners' attention. If parents want their children to feel loved, a better bet would be to find a book they'll both enjoy and share it together. (Picture book. 4-7)

Beautiful Art plus Beautiful Words = a Keeper

I've collected children's books for years even though I don't have kids and this type of book shows you why. Great for reading aloud, its outstanding artwork features animals from bears to giraffes beautifully illustrated - no kiddie cartoon drawings here. This is one for your keeper shelf.

    Simply lovely

I was looking for a book to give my daughter-in-law for Christmas. Our first grandchild will be five months old a few days after Christmas, and I wanted a very special book for mother to read to daughter. I opened this book and was in tears within pages. The beauty of the text, paired with the marvelous illustrations, simply overwhelmed this emotional new grandma. I bought it immediately. I've also ordered it online as gifts for my nieces, who are also relatively new moms. The book is perfect for quiet times reading to little ones, and the message is one that no child can hear too often.

    This is a must read!

My 25 year old daughter and I try to give each other a special children's book at Christmas. This year I think I have found the ultimate book to help tell her how much I love her! Thank you so much Nancy Tillman for putting my feelings in words!

    love love love this book

I bought this book for my husband and daughter to read together. We are a military family and this book is perfect for us. My husband is currently deployed and I read this to our daughter every night. Even though her daddy isn't home to read it to her, thanks to this book she knows that his love will follow her where she may go. Thank you Nancy Tillman for writing a book that is perfect for our family.

great book of a parent's love for all ages.

a sweet book reminding our children they are loved whereever they may be....as with her other books the art work is beautifully done. My four year old daughter loves it and my girl friend's 13 year old son does too.

    Touching

We lost our baby girl last year and this book is so fitting for our family. Even though it was written for a living child, Maya's brothers and sister can see something tangible in the words of this book. They now understand that love exists even when there is only a memory. Thank you so much, Nancy, for this beautiful book we now hold so dear.

    A Love Letter...

. This is a love story disguised as a book. . This a beautiful ode to children. Share it the children in your life to let them know they are well-loved and well-supported in all they do. . This would make a lovely gift for your child, grandchild, godchild, etc, on the occasion of their birth or any milestone in the early years. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Nancy Tillman's Wherever You Are is so much more than a book. It is a poem, a love song and a love letter from adult to child. Tillman's self-described mission is "to convey to children everywhere that they are loved." That is just what she did with this lovely picture book. The story of this book is simple, you are loved. That no matter where you go, my love will follow. Each spread contains a sentiment like that alongside an exquisite illustration of a young child with a different animal. This is the type of book that is meant to be read together while cuddling, letting the children in your life know just how much they are cherished. There is a whole genre of books like this and they are so important. These books accomplish so many things. For instance, they give you loving time with your little one. They also allow young children to be comforted, which is just lovely in general, while also associating many warm feelings with the act of reading. Stories like these allow children to refer back to them as they age, and remember simple times in the warmth of your embrace. Sentimental? You bet! But not cloyingly so.
