Children's Literature - Margaret Orto
This simple book in the "My World" series introduces young children to the concept of four seasons by relaying characteristics of that particular time of year as well as activities enjoyed. It is also noted that in parts of the world there are only two seasons—wet and dry. A words-to-know page at the beginning lists autumn, summer, spring, and winter as well as dry season and wet season and identifies each of these words through helpful photographs. These same words are bolded throughout the text when used. Each page never has more than three sentences and they often repeat the same grammatical pattern from a previous page making it appropriate for the Level C guided reader rating. Several children are depicted in the first person. The text switches to second person when the reader is asked a direct question such as: What do you do in each season? Color photographs throughout show children engaged in appropriate seasonal activities. Photographs are bright and clear. Some look staged and lend an inauthentic quality; other photographs, fortunately, are more natural. A helpful Notes for Adults page is included at the back. Reviewer: Margaret Orto
