Ilene Cooper
Matthias is a shepherd boy celebrating his eighth birthday; for the first time, he will spend the whole night with the other shepherds. He receives a carved whistle as a gift, but there are other surprises to follow. A lamb is born, an event that touches Matthias deeply. But as the night grows deeper, another miracle occurs that will change the world. An angel appears and tells them the good news: a very special child has been born in Bethlehem. With the rest of the shepherds, Matthias hurries to the stable where the child and his parents rest. He takes the lamb with him, and it is that newborn the baby notices. When the child touches the lamb, a happiness that knows no bounds wells up inside Matthias. He leaves the whistle, but takes home something much greater. While there is nothing unusual about this version of the familiar Christmas story, it is nicely told, and the full-color scratchboard artwork is stylistically appealing. Libraries wanting to stock holiday shelves will find this an apt choice.
