Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
It all starts when the wind blows a little girl's hat off her head. That same wind has flown flags, filled sails and helped a kite ride high in the sky. If it is strong enough it can also bend trees and make the telephone wires hum. In each scene we see the young girl and her dad chasing her beautiful red hat. On the final spread she has succeeded and puts the hat on her head but must hang on because the wind is still blowing. As the back cover says, this is a good choice for the three-year-old who is beginning to understand the connections between events. Part of the "HarperGrowing Tree" series, which includes tips for reading and sharing stories and a web site with additional information. 2001, HarperFestival, $9.95. Ages 3 to 4. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 3-A small girl is walking and then sailing in a small boat with her father on a windy day when her hat blows away. The entire text is one long sentence: "The wind/that whirled/your hat/away/furled a flag/filled a sail/raced a boat-/tolled a bell/atop a church/chased some crows-/all the while you were/chasing/a hat." Litzinger's simple illustrations show the child and her dad chasing the bright orange hat across a rolling, hilly landscape and seascape consistently colored split-pea green. Gentle, subdued colors provide a good backdrop to the hat, which can always be found on the well-composed spreads. The triumphant youngster clutching her hat fills the concluding endpapers. Preschoolers and early readers will enjoy the contemporary illustrations in this windy tale.-Laura Scott, Baldwin Public Library, Birmingham, MI Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Softly muted pastels color this story of a runaway hat and all the things that the wind can do. As the twisting wind snatches a little girl's hat away, it carries it past many amazing sights: soaring kites, speeding sailboats, bending trees, and tumbling crows. The poetic story is laid out in simple rhyme, with short phrases on each page: "The wind / that whirled / your hat / away / furled a flag / raced a boat / tugged a kite / tweaked its tail . . ." Following the child as she pursues the hat, children will be encouraged to find it on each page as she gets closer and closer. The linking of events as she runs through the story will also challenge even the youngest children to understand the connection of things. The simplicity of the words, coupled with the uncomplicated yet beautiful illustrations, offers a soothing look at the natural world. (Harper Growing Trees series) (Picture book. 2-5)
