Overview

A sailboat fails to arrive at its next port of call after crossing into a “live-fire” naval exercise area just north of the border known as “Whiskey Gulf.” Charlie Noble is asked to investigate why the sailboat went missing, and what happened to the couple aboard. But Noble runs into a wall of secrecy erected by the American and Canadian governments, and into troubling questions about the real identity of the couple involved.

Ultimately, he and his partner, Raven, set sail on the Noble Lady in a case that leads them up the Inside Passage to the remote coast of British Columbia. There, they discover a hidden cove, which harbors answers about what really happened in Whiskey Gulf. But first they must survive a vicious attack in order to return with the truth. Set in the stunning wilderness of coastal British Columbia, Whiskey Gulf is a story about unearthing secrets from the past that others would rather remain concealed forever.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Ford's third Charlie Noble suspense novel shares the same shortcomings as its predecessors, Red Herring and Precious Cargo. Noble, a former Coast Guardsman who now works as a maritime PI in Washington State, looks into the disappearance of Bill and Becky Kinsley, who sailed their 40-foot ketch into a live-fire naval exercise area called Whiskey Gulf. After some initial investigating, Noble gets a tip from a friend in intelligence-that the Kinsleys' boat was destroyed as a cover to shield them from a terrorist, Ali Sharik, whose brother happens to be the bad guy Noble shot after the brother tried to blow up a U.S. ship near Bahrain. Action fans may roll their eyes at the relationship discussions between Noble and his Coast Guard girlfriend, Lt. Kate Sullivan. Ungainly prose may put off others ("my coffee took on the color of Ali Sharik's angry eyes when I'd stood facing him with the news that I'd killed his brother"). Author tour. (July)

    Not Great, But Good

Charlie Noble is a retired Commander from the US Coast Guard Intelligence who is now earning a living as a private investigator. Charlie has been hired by the Kulshan Yacht Club to investigate the disappearance of two of the clubs members, William and Rebecca Kinsley who were last heard from when they radioed the Coast Guard with a Mayday because their sailboat was taking on water. Did they hit an rock hidden in the fog? Or did a torpedo hit them? Charlie uses his vast knowledge and resources to find out the truth. I liked this book, but it had to many technical marine terms for me. Although one of my hobbies is boating, I felt there were to many descriptions of the boats, ships, motors etc. It seemed at times to go on and on and I lost interest quickly. So after awhile, I just started skipping over those parts. Plus some of the dialogue seems a bit unnatural. Other than those two things, this is a pretty good book with an interesting storyline. I wouldn't recommend it to everyone, but those who can take all the information about boats/ships (or skip over it like I did) will have a great time reading Whiskey Gulf.

    An enjoyable read.

As a fan of action mysteries I found this to be a rather enjoyable read. The characters were very believable. When I read I get a picture in my mind of what I am reading and this book was no exception. I had never read a book by this author before this but I may look for other stories by him and add him to my list of authors that I read.

Action, action, and action to the nth degree makes WHISKEY GULF an absorbing thriller

In the waters of Whiskey Gulf in British Columbia, joint naval maneuversby Canada and the United States are going on when the damaged and filling with water sailboat Rebecca Anne enters the exercise zone. The Kinsleys reach the Comax Coast Guard who transfers them to Winchelsea Control before they are cut off and never heard from again. The Kulsham Yacht Club hires former Coast Guard investigator turned maritime private sleuth Charlie Noble to learn what happened to the couple.----

He goes to the area in Whisky Gulf where the sailboat allegedly landed and finds fiberglass pieces and other evidence that supports the theory the Rebecca Anne blew up. Charlie sees two torpedoes going through the water near him. Charlie later learns they were used as a decoy to show the buying country Baharin that the guidance system still needs work. Intelligence confirms that the Kinsley's (not their real names) are needed to testify against a terrorist in the States while the Canadians hide them to keep them safe until they do. An assassin is coming to kill them; a person Charlie once called friend until he shot his brother and that former pal plans to take out Charlie too for killing his sibling.-----------

Action, action, and action to the nth degree makes WHISKEY GULF an absorbing thriller filled with characters who for the most part are hyperbole to insure the action never decelerates. Charlie is retired, but feels duty bound to help destroy a terrorist cell. His partner Raven brings depth to Charlie as he is like a father figure to him. Clyde Ford provides a thriller faster than a speeding Mustang filled with surprising twists and revelations.--------------
