Overview

Young for his class and small for his age, Porter Osborne, Jr., leaves his rural Georgia home in 1938 to meet the world at Willingham University, armed with the knowledge that he has been "Raised Right" in the best Baptist tradition. What happens over the next four years will challenge the things he holds infallible: his faith, his heritage, and his parents' omniscience. As we follow Porter's college career, full of outrageous pranks and ribald humor, we sense a quiet, constant flow toward maturity. Peppered with memorable characters and resonant with details of place and time, The Whisper of the River is filled with the richness of spirit that makes great fiction.

    Country Boy goes to College

This is a continuation of the story of Porter Osborne Jr., aka Sambo. In the first chapter the author gives us some of Sambo's background if you haven't read the first book. The main character grew up in the country in Georgia and was raised Baptist and hence was raised right. This comes up throughout the story over and over, and Sambo often depends on his being raised right as his means of salvation as opposed to his faith in Christ. The author does a good job of showing how the same character and those around him can at one moment be living a moralistic life style and then immediately turn and you see the total depravity of man. Often I found myself being very disappointed in the choices Sambo made, but then again as a man in need of grace should I really be surprised that this character also needs grace and forgiveness. There are times that the language seems more crude than necessary, but again that illustrates the sinfulness of man. I enjoyed and recommend this book and Lord willing I will read the third installment. I will wonder how Sambo can take so much pride in being raised Baptist. After all, he is not Presbyterian.

    Insightful

Though at times a slow read, parts of this book are very funny. As a student about to head of to college, it was interesting to see the emotions that Porter experiences and how he grows up and his views change.

    Unpredictable mirth at its best

Dr. Sams proves in this novel that he has an inate sense of what we are as humans. Porter is all that we would want to be if we could but just have the insight to act and think Right in every situation. The author's southern style lends a smoothness to his storytelling that makes it appear as natural as any writer I have read.
