Barnes & Noble - Carol Wright
Nominated for a Grammy in 2001, Maire Brennan's Whisper to the Wild Water delivers a potent spiritual message. Brennan -- founder of the Celtic group Clannad and Enya's older sister -- rediscovered her Catholic faith and with her husband/producer Tim Jarvis who happens to be Protestant embraces a concept here called Celtic Christianity. Her original prayers and hymns stand tall beside a few standards, such as the St. Francis Prayer, "Peacemaker," and "Bí Thusa Mo Shúile," a Gaelic version of the traditional hymn "Be Thou My Vision." Unlike a lot of other great Celtic new age music, you won't truly feel the impact of the intent here until you dive into the lyrics; ...

Francis Prayer, "Peacemaker," and "Bí Thusa Mo Shúile," a Gaelic version of the traditional hymn "Be Thou My Vision." Unlike a lot of other great Celtic new age music, you won't truly feel the impact of the intent here until you dive into the lyrics; Brennan stands on firm yet abidingly universal ground. The first track, "Follow the Word," rides a jaunty set of rhythm loops as it sets out on an upbeat crusade of hope with banners waving. Although there's no direct mention of Jesus anywhere, Brennan's clear about the intent behind the capital "Y" in lines like "Show me Your love," "I trust in Your ways," and "I found Your love inside my heart." The musical arrangements are hip and plenty Irish if that's what you seek, and Brennan does sound enough like Enya to please those fans. But if you're also looking for substantive music to get you through some rough times, there's new inspiration waiting in each play of Whisper to the Wild Water.
All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
Máire Brennan sets a series of prayers in English and Gaelic to music on her second album for the religious label Word. The musical style is informed by Celtic music and hymns, but also uses elements of rock, as Brennan sings with considerable echo, sometimes suggesting the round tones of Judy Collins. The massed backup vocals with their ethereal sound often recall the work of Brennan's sister Enya, though her songs are more focused. The tone of generalized religious devotion in the lyrics and Brennan's angelic singing sometimes make the music sound like it comes from centuries ago, despite the occasional electric instrumentation and 1990s production values.

She sounds like her sister, Enya...

I knew Maire was Enya's oldest sister; I was afraid to get this album, because I didn't know how she would sound. If you like Enya, this is for you. They sound just alike. Maire's lyrics are a little different from Enya's; & her beats are a little up tempo. If you like Enya, you'll like Maire. This was the first album I bought of Maire & I must say this is a great album, after I listen to this album I started to buy her other albums.
