Whispers of the Low Country - Poems: The Tides, The Saltmarsh, and Beyond:
In the hush between tides, where pluff mud listens and spartina leans toward the wind, Whispers from the Low Country beckons you into a world where memory, ecology, and spirit converge. Through luminous verse and layered voices-from heron to fiddler crab, dolphin to dragonfly-John Kassel crafts a poetic cartography of South Carolina's marshes, barrier islands, and tidal forests.

This is not just a place- it's a rhythm:

Step barefoot into the in-between. Listen to what the marsh remembers.

About the Author

John Kassel is a lifelong educator, mentor, and environmentalist whose fifty-year journey in teaching began in the classrooms and athletic fields of Pennsylvania, Virginia, and South Carolina. A graduate of Penn State University, he spent decades nurturing curiosity, resilience, and wonder in his students—often outside
the confines of textbooks and buildings. Whether coaching teams or leading nature excursions, Kassel drew inspiration from the quiet wisdom of forests, marshes, and coastlines, always encouraging young minds to listen deeply to the world around them.

Now retired from formal teaching, Kassel continues his vocation as a storyteller. He is the author of two young adult novels, Return to Brandy Station and The Siege of Baltimore, historical adventures that invite readers into thrilling time bending journeys. His debut poetry collection, Tides of Change: A Work in Progress, marked a new creative chapter— one where reflective verse took the place of lectures, and metaphors supplanted chalkboards. Through poetry, Kassel explores personal and planetary themes with honesty and hope.

Whispers from the Low Country represents a culmination of Kassel’s passions: a love of nature, a reverence for memory, and a deep commitment to understanding our place within the fragile ecosystems we inhabit. This poetry collection draws on the voices of tide, bird, marsh, and spirit—echoing the rhythms of South Carolina’s barrier islands and coastal forests. As in life, Kassel’s work offers not easy answers, but quiet invitations to look again, listen longer, and walk gently through a world that speaks in whispers.
