Editorial Reviews

New York Times Book Review
"Mr. Keats's illustrations boldy, colorfully capture the child, his city world, and the shimmering heat of a summer's day".--The New York Times.
Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Peter wishes he could whistle. It would be so great. He knows that if he could make such a sound then his dog would certainly come running to him. He tries and he tries. Then finally it happens, he learns to whistle and sure enough, Willie, his dog, comes a running. The story offers much more by revealing Peter's daily activities and his warm and happy family. A delightful transition into board book format, this story is now accessible to an even younger audience. 1998 (orig.

Meet the Author

Ezra Jack Keats (1916–1983) is the Caldecott Medal winning author of The Snowy Day, which broke ground in 1962 as one of the first picture books for young children to portray a realistic, multi-cultural urban setting. Since its initial publication, The Snowy Day has come to be regarded as both a children’s classic and one of the most important picture books ever written/illustrated. Ezra Jack Keats’ legacy lives on in the popularity of his most famous character, Peter—the star of The Snowy Day, Whistle for Willie, Peter's Chair, A Letter to Amy, Goggles, and others. There were not alot of books with brown faces on the cover . But this one did ! All of Ezra Keat's bookswere exciting to me. They often took place in a city. And they were the stories a child could relate to, told using a child's voice. My sisters and I cheriahed these books for years and still do today. I am sixty four and I still enjoy this book and the others we've read over and over and over again.
