Overview

There are an unusual number of albino white-tailed deer in some counties of northern Wisconsin. Perhaps no one has spent as much time following these white "ghosts of the forest" as photographer Jeff Richter. He has committed hundreds of images of white deer to film over many years of photographing nature and wildlife. In this book, Richter shares the best of the albino whitetail photos here. This stunning book contains albino bucks, some in velvet, does, yearlings and mixed groups. There are brown does with white fawns and white does with brown fawns.

The images include other wildlife such as squirrels, that sometimes have albinism or melanism (black coloring).

Outdoor writer and naturalist John Bates weighs in with his own impressions of these fascinating animals. John references historical accounts of white deer in northern Wisconsin, and wisely tempers the subject with an explanation of the genetics of albinism and a discussion of the implications of this phenomenon. For example, does it make sense to protect albinoes from hunting, as some states do? Might white deer have an advantage where snow may cover the ground nearly half the year?

The book White Deer: Ghosts of the Forest is available in deluxe softcover, hardcover and a limited edition with an enclosed signed print.

As Beautifully Presented as the Deer About Which it is Written

Eloquent & stirring are 2 words I use to describe this book. Presenting the legendary White Deer, the book is beautifully produced, showing the deer in their natural environment.
I was so impressed with the photos circulating on the internet that I immediately ordered the book & do not regret it.
It can be appreciated by adults & would be a joy to share with kids.
Professionals in the field might not find it scientifically authoratative but should appreciate the beauty of the animals & their surroundings

    Interesting Read

This book was a gift for my husband who is an avid outdoors man and he really enjoyed reading about the white deer.

    Breathtaking pictures

This book was full of great information as well as beautiful pictures that almost seem unreal. Great for the coffee table or just to learn about nature and its oddities. Great pictures for children and reading for adults who enjoy nature and animals.

    Photos nice, text simplistic.

This is a nice book but not something you'd use as a reference. I liked the pictures and some of the text, but had hoped for either a more historical approach, with lore of the white deer and detailed historical documentation of the deer. Or, a mystical approach. It's a fun book to look at at learn about these deer, though.
