Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Tim Whitney
Written and set in New England during the late 1800's, nine-year-old Sylvia, a shy and lonely girl of the woods, must decide whether she will help the ornithologist who is searching for the great white heron. The young man wishes to shoot the bird and add it to his stuffed collection, and only Sylvia knows where the beautiful bird keeps its nest. The tale is definitely typical of the time period in which it was written, particularly with regard to the language and its portrayal of women, but the beautiful illustrations bring the story to life and make this book a collector's item.
