Editorial Reviews

Anne Tyler
"White Horses" combines the concrete and the dreamlike. Its characters are people we think we recoginze at first; but then on second thought we're not so sure. There's an almost seamless transition from the real to the unreal, back and forth and back again. . . . "White Horses" is a satisfying novel, at the same time mysterious and believable, and it marks a significant advance for Alice Hoffman. -- New York Times

    A hauntingly beautiful book

'White Horses' was my introduction to Alice Hoffman. Only in her skilled hands could such a dark subject be treated with such beauty and grace. Her sparkling descriptions and characterizations are pure magic. An achingly beautiful book about what happens when one tries to bridge the worlds of one's fantasy and the stark, painful reality of the real world. An absolute gem!

    yuck

This book was depressing and gross. I finished it, just to see if Silver would be killed and do everyone a favor.

    Not Recommended

I kept waiting for the story to take off. The entire book seemed like it was setting the stage for something that never happened. The underlying sub-plot of incest certainly should have been hinted at during the synopsis. It was unnecessary and diminished the already weak plot. I felt like it had been thrown in simply for shock value. I started skippng and skimming about halfway through, and had I anything else to read, I would have put it down and not picked it up again. Not her best effort by a long shot.

    Disappointed

I had to force myself to finish this book because I was disgusted with the incest relationship that was going on throughout the book. If you can get over the whole incest thing, then I suppose the rest of the book wasn't to bad.
