Editorial Reviews

Since John Adams first moved into the White House in November 1800, the presidential residence has been the site of one major conflagration (during the War of 1812), a complete reconstruction (in 1948-1951), and several restorations, refurbishments, and expansions. With hundreds of photographs and illustrations and a fascinating text, this stately hardcover serves as both a rich visual history of the White House and a guided tour of its premises. This coffee table gift book was photography history specialist Vicki Goldberg with the cooperation of the preservation and education group established by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy to open the doors of the White House to the public.
