Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
White can be boring but not with this introduction to common objects associated with this pure color. Although this book focuses on the color white, it is interspersed with a variety of vivid colors that charm young children and make the color white even more distinctive. Part of Capstone Press's "Colors" series—10 books in all—this title takes non-fiction text such as children are exposed to once they start school and presents it in a simple format, complete with basic elements of expository text such as a table of contents, a glossary and an index. Despite these additions, the presentation remains basic and its text an easy read for most first-grade students. The uncomplicated photos and wording will appeal to even younger children in a read-aloud or a pretend read situation. Additional facts inserted in boxes give information in a more complicated vocabulary. A welcome approach in this first-fact-book venue is inclusion of primary text full of simple rhymes and consisting of no more than seven words per page. Both are a pleasant surprise in this type of early reader and important contributors to phonological development. 2005, Capstone Press, Ages 4 to 7.
