Editorial Reviews

Steven Heller
When my son was younger I bought him all of Carter's pop-up bug books, which are magical. But the entire color series is more than mere pop-up entertainment—particularly White Noise, which is a laptop sculpture garden, a romp through cubism and futurism, and a lesson in early-20th-century modernist formalism…Carter's creations are akin to fireworks displays, each building in pyrotechnical intensity until the most impressive burst at the end.
—The New York Times
Publishers Weekly
In Carter's final “color” book (after One Red Dot, Yellow Square, and others), abstract paper pop-up sculptures form a symphony of white noise—clicks, clacks, and the like—as they expand. Gently batting “a tangle of bits and pieces” that hang by string produces “tinkling white noise,” while on another page, readers can drag their fingers along fibrous, crenellated wings to make a strumming sound. References to sculptor Sir Anthony Caro and artist Bruno Munari, among others, will be lost on young readers, but the expressive, intricate shapes, blistering primary color palette, and subtle audio dimension are entrancing. Ages 3–up. (Oct.)
Children's Literature
The fifth and final volume in Carter's series of paper sculptures on colors and perception includes "a search entirely based on sound," along with hidden references to each of the previous books. The text is minimal: for each double-page spread there is a note on the construction such as "rainbow bubble blast," or "tangle of bits and pieces," followed by the kind of white noise, "crackly," or "tinkling," produced. Part of his challenge to the reader is to find the source of the noise as the pop-up rises from the page. This striking anthology of paper sculptures has no narrative or obvious sequencing of esthetic content. Instead it is a collection of complex objects designed to fold flat and, when opened, to create a multicolored sculpture meant to be viewed from all angles. The subtle noise production is a plus that adds an intriguing quality. We must admire the ingenuity of the designing process of this master of pop-up sculpture as we may puzzle over the minimal text. Carter has added some explanatory notes on the series and his sources on an accompanying sheet. The raised white paper ripples in designs on the front cover add both visual and tactile appeal. School Library Journal
Gr 3 Up—Carter's fifth installment in his innovative, color-themed paper-sculpture series incorporates another level of sensory interaction for readers to take note of and explore. Sound plays an important role in the artwork from the cover (fingers can be strummed along the raised, textured starburst shapes) to the unfurling and contemplation of each of the nine paper-engineering marvels contained within. Like the other offerings in the series, the poetic text tantalizingly refers to the displayed pop-up while leaving much to interpretation by the imagination ("Rainbow bubble blast/and crackly white noise") or explanation from canny adults ("Sir Anthony's easel/and Munari's white noise"). The paper structures are as breathtaking as ever, with the sound effects varying from "white noise" created as the sculpture is deployed to pieces with added aural wows (the "tinkling" of cutout circles hanging from string or a pull tab that runs along serrated xylophonelike card stock). The relationship between words, sounds, and visuals is consistently pleasing, thought-provoking, and playful. In addition to grabbing the eye and ear, this book seems a natural for extensions in music and art classes.—Joy Fleishhacker, School Library Journal
Kirkus Reviews
Noises in most pop-up books are accidents: An over-glued element gets unstuck, or-horrors-rips entirely. But this, the fifth and last in Carter's Color series (600 Black Spots, 2007, etc.), actively crackles, tinkles and creaks. Using his customary flat primary-and-black-and-white palette, the artist/engineer creates paper sculptures that leap off the page in complex, Modernist designs, each one enlivened by some movable element-in white paper-that rubs against the others to make a noise. Some ratchet by themselves as the pages open, another requires the pull of a tab, yet another-white paper "wings" joined by a taut string-begs fingers to touch for an assist. Knowledgeable adults will recognize nods to Modern artists and jazz musicians; children will simply be enthralled by the totality of the experience. (Pop-up/picture book. 6 & up)

    ABSOLUTELY AMAZING PAPER STRUCTURES

Following his amazing, highly successful paper structure series (One Red Dot, Blue 2, 600 Black Spots, Yellow Square) the ingenious David Carter presents his final volume, WHITE NOISE, a nonpareil pop-up book for everyone from two to 92.

Beginning with "Rainbow bubble blast and crackly white noise," the pages sing as they are opened. In fact, they both spring and sing as the incredible boldly colored structures leap from the page. As the author has noted, "On some pages the sound is subtle, and on some pages the sound is obvious, but it is always created by the white portion of that page's structure." In addition to listening for the sound, you'll also discover a red dot, a blue 2, 600 black spots and a yellow square, all references to Carter's previous titles.

One structure in the book, Sierra Nevada Chopsticks, came about because Carter lives in California's Sierra Nevada Mountains and this piece "resembles snowy mountain peaks with angular paper shapes that jut up like chopstick." Also, while enjoying this, look for the author's ski tracks off the back side of the highest peak.

To be fully appreciated this book calls for repeated visits not only to experience the art but to hear again the unique sounds. White Noise is exciting, entertaining, and exhilarating!
