White Pony [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - David Sprague
Over the past half-decade or so, the Deftones have developed from a run-of-the-mill thrash hybrid into an inexorable force of sorts -- thanks in large part to the charisma, smarts, and energy of front man Chino Mariano, who comes across as a bilingual composite of Korn's Jonathan Davis and Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan. He's more melody-driven than most of his peers, a trait he flaunts on "Change in the House of Flies" and "Passenger" which features a cameo from Maynard James Keenan of Tool and A Perfect Circle. The Sacramento combo broaden their palette significantly on WHITE PONY, their third full-length outing, fully incorporating DJ Delgado into the mix of songs ...

He's more melody-driven than most of his peers, a trait he flaunts on "Change in the House of Flies" and "Passenger" which features a cameo from Maynard James Keenan of Tool and A Perfect Circle. The Sacramento combo broaden their palette significantly on WHITE PONY, their third full-length outing, fully incorporating DJ Delgado into the mix of songs and freeing guitarist Stephen Carpenter to explore more far-reaching riffage, as on the tropical stomp "Feiticiera" and the ultra-tense "Knife Party." Mariano, as ever, is pissed off at just about everything and everyone -- as evidenced by the seething "RX Queen" -- but you never get the feeling that he's interested in exploring ugliness for its own sake. It might be stretching things a bit to call the Deftones a sensitive bunch of guys, but WHITE PONY makes you think there are hearts of gold in there somewhere.
All Music Guide - MacKenzie Wilson
Hard rockers Deftones take their heavy post-grunge ways to another level on their third album White Pony. Sensing painful frustrations and personal rediscovery with its allusive microcosm of an album title, the Californian alt-rock five piece were periodically stifled while making White Pony. Their 1997 sophomore effort Around the Fur was hailed to blast out commercially, but such pressure crippled the band musically and personally. The band struggled with leading its direction, trudging through weighed emotion, but White Pony was the tantalizing outcome. Deftones went soft, but in an impressive way, to twist around its signature punk thrash sound. Frontman Chino Moreno is still intense, and his sour vocals throughout the entire record growl and stomp all over mainstream movements. He is bored with it all. "Feiticeira" calls out against authority with textured guitars and gnarling percussive throws. "Elite" is sonically industrial and embryonic, as Moreno's beer-soaked vocals scream like Ministry's Al Jourgensen and Skinny Puppy's Nivek Ogre. Lyrically, Moreno is exquisitely mind-blowing, but his fear is also evident. Check out the fierce ballad-esque "Teenager" -- the innocent days when life seemed easy can only be dreams now. Moreno's duet with Tool's Maynard James Keenan on "Passenger" is as equally tender. The first single, "Change In the House of Flies," is hardening in the way that punk can be sultry and not just pogo-skanking nonsense. It is honest, stripped, and exposed with it's flowing guitar riffs and haunting orchestral back drops. There aren't any lackluster similarities to Limp Bizkit and Korn. Deftones have forged ahead, unafraid to delve into the influences of The Smiths and The Cure.
Rolling Stone - Ann Powers
...a classic alternative-rock album, as gentle and catchy as it is dark.

    Damn, this CD smokes!!!!

I just got turned on to the Deftones by a friend. Yes, you can call me a late bloomer, but ever since I have been turned on to them, let me tell you I AM SOLD. White Pony is excellent. The whole CD is awesome. Every song is good. The vocals are excellent. I am totally sold. Now I want ALL their albums.

    White Pony is amazing

When Chino and the rest of the group, know to the world as Deftones, decided to put together an album composed of a calm, cool form of heavy rock. They just might have put together one of the best albums ever composed in the history of mankind. The almost calm sensations of rock is the definition of driving music, which they describe on the album with the help of Tool's head singer Maynard James Keenan. When you witness this phenomenon in concert you might leave saying how the Deftones have a magnificent stage presence, unless you catch them on a night when they happen to be extremely wasted, then you might be convinced otherwise.

    Definately Different

The deftones have once again reinvented themselves this time with White Pony. It's a long way from Around the fur and more reminiscent to Adrenaline. Mellower sound but it still rocks.

    Good album

They do awesome stuff when it's recorded, but they totally suck live. One of the worst bands I've ever seen live.

Great Album - Am glad they took their time.

They'e done it. A great album that stands on its own. Not a sequel to 'Around the Fur', but different album - the sounds seem finer in detail. The lyrics remain Deftonely evasive in meaning most, if not all the time. Turn up the volume, enjoy the contrasts.

    Deftones Best Yet!

The Deftones Third Album White Pony does not disappoint. The new stuff is somewhat more melodic but songs like Korea and Elite stuff bring up the heavy end.

    NO COMPARISON

This new album is awesome, each song is great!! Deftones deliver, every song, every album. They continue to put out great music, never straying from their formula and avoiding radio friendly pop-metal (Limp Bizkit) White Pony is a definate must purchase!!!
