Overview

"Listen," said Dad.
"What's that?" I asked.
"White water!" he shouted.
"Hang on tight!"

When a father brings his son on a white water rafting trip, he hopes his son will share his love of the river. Inspired by a real life experience, renowned writer and poet Jonathan London and his son Aaron perfectly convey the thrill of speeding over rapids, the joy of seeing wild horses, and the quiet pleasure of falling asleep under a billion stars after a great meal around the campfire. Jill Kastner's lush nature paintings make it clear that this is a trip that father and son won't soon forget-and neither will the reader.

A boy learns to read the river when he goes white water rafting with his dad.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Could reading about an exhilarating ride through river rapids make the splashes feel real? It happens in this picture storybook of a white water adventure down Utah's Green River, largely due to the incredible images. The oil painting illustrations have a textual, impressionistic quality that evokes the roar and wet thrill of running rapids. With the exception of the title and final pages, all illustrations are double-page spreads and are exceptionally vivid with color, mood and movement. Based upon a real experience, the story is written by a father and son team. It begins with the family arriving at the "put-out" camp the night before the seven-day, guided river trip. The boy as narrator describes his first encounter with white water "as if thousands of white rabbits were jumping around us." The text is engagingly simple and, with the beautiful illustrations, creates a vision of a family vacation from which memories endure. For the child who has enjoyed such a vacation, the book is a skillful retelling. For the child who has not experienced such an adventure, it is the best of vicarious times. 2001, Viking, $15.99. Ages 4 to 8. Reviewer: Jacki Vawter

Gr 2-4-As a father and son set off on a rafting trip on the Green River in Utah, the man tells the boy, "-you'll learn to read the river-which way looks safer, which way is more dangerous." During their seven-day wilderness experience, they join eight other rafters crashing through rapids, sitting around the campfire, eating great food, observing wildlife, and sleeping "under a billion bright stars." The thrill of riding rapids is captured on double-page impressionistic oil paintings that accompany the simple narrative. For those who have never been on white water, this combination of text and illustration is a wonderful introduction.
