Overview

Andrew Clements delivers the latest in his adventure-filled school series.

This could be the last great Memorial Day weekend on Barclay Bay, and Ben knows it. This time next year, he might not be able to stand in the yard of the Oakes School and watch the harbor shake off winter—boats buzzing just beyond the bulkhead and families spreading picnics in the fields. If the school gets torn down and replaced by an amusement park, the town will never be the same. But that’s only if the school gets torn down. Ben and Jill are determined to keep that from happening. And the evil janitor Lyman has taken note. He’s following their every move—and undoing their progress along the way. Good thing Ben and Jill have a secret weapon. (Who knew that annoying Robert Gerritt would be such a spy wiz?) But Lyman has a secret weapon as well: a vicious guard dog. These kids are smart, but can they outsmart Lyman—and his beast—as the clock tick, tick, ticks toward total demolition?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Audio
Clements’s third book in the Benjamin Pratt & the Keepers of the School series finds the titular character fighting to prevent his school from being torn down and replaced by an oceanfront amusement park. Accompanied by his good friend Jill, Ben takes on the janitor Lyman, who is secretly working for the corporation interested in demolishing the school. Keith Nobbs, who made his name playing street-wise toughs and cops, may seem an odd choice to narrate this audio edition of a middle-grade novel. However, his handling of Ben’s first-person narration is perfect and his performance brings the book’s wild plot down to earth, More importantly, Nobbs’s rendition of Ben is true to the text and believable. The only weakness in his performance is the voice Nobbs lends to Jill; she simply doesn’t sounds like a teenage girl. Ages 7–10. An Atheneum hardcover. (Feb.)
School Library Journal - Audio
Gr3–6—Ben and his friends continue their quest to save their school from being bulldozed by greedy developers in the third book (Atheneum, 2012) in the series by Andrew Clements. It picks up after the death of the janitor who has been replaced by a corporate spy planted by the company that hopes to replace the school with an amusement park. Ben, Jill, and Robert use the clues they previously found to discover a token which yields a potentially game-changing amount of money held in a trust that is now at their disposal. They also uncover a historically significant room that used to be part of the Underground Railroad. The amateur spy gang displays impressive skills for a group so young. Keith Nobbs does a good job of voicing the teen and adult characters.—Kristie Miller, Alexander Central Schools, NY
