Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverly Melasi
Christopher and his sister, Sarah, travel to Australia to visit their Uncle Nathan. They plan to go whitewater rafting down the Franklin River. As Christopher helps tie their gear down on the raft, he isn't sure he likes the idea of going on what his uncle calls, "the trip of a lifetime." At first it's pretty cool as they glide down the lazy river. But soon comes the sound of loud, rushing water, and around the bend is the most violent stretch of river he's ever seen. Huge waves crash over boulders pushing their raft sideways, causing Sarah to be thrown out of the raft. Christopher fears for her life, and is angry with his uncle for bringing them there. They get Sarah back in the raft, but there's more whitewater ahead. The water is too high, and the river too fast. When their raft is about to dive over a huge waterfall, their only hope is to grab the branches of a large tree hanging over the river. Christopher is sure they are doomed, but they cling to a branch and hang on while their raft disappears over the waterfall. This book was exciting from beginning to end. The author captures the thrill and danger of whitewater rafting. Reviewer: Beverly Melasi
