Whizziwig Returns

by Malorie Blackman, Judy Bennett

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-Whizziwig is a space alien with the power to grant wishes made for someone else. Her return visit to British schoolboys Steve and Ben causes innumerable hilarious problems. Both boys and the people they encounter each day are prone to making thoughtless wishes, such as Ben's wishing that Steve had an "on/off switch," and Ben's teacher wishing that Ben was more like the good girl who does all her homework. The on/off switch appears on Steve's forehead, and Ben suddenly has braces and long hair. While the results of the wishes are predictable, that is part of the fun and listeners will groan with pleasurable anticipation as each impulsive wish is uttered. The humor is not subtle and at time seems overdone, such as when Steve tells Ben he threw up on his Aunt's Yucca plant. "Yuck" says Whizziwig. "No, Yucca" says Steve. Young listeners will probably enjoy it all the more because of such obvious jokes. Although the book by Malorie Blackman (Puffin, 1999) is a sequel, it stands alone. A few Briticisms such as "plaster" for Band-Aid might initially confuse some listeners, but it will not interfere with their enjoyment. Though there is little other than the cover illustration to indicate this, Ben is black while Steve is white. This is an enjoyable listening story. Although the plot is loose and characters are exaggerated, it is much like listening to a funny sit-com (which according to the cover it will soon be on British TV). Judy Bennett's expressive reading enters into the spirit of the story and evokes the personality of each character well. This audiobook has broad kid-appeal and may even win converts to audio books among reluctant readers.-Louise L. Sherman, Anna C.
