Chapter One

"I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar"

If you haven't heard this lyric, either you slept through 1982 or you're deaf. "Don't You Want Me" by the Human League was (and still is) one of the most memorable songs of the decade. The only thing bigger in July of that year was Steven Spielberg's E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, which went on to gross $400 million. Legend has it that E.T.'s face was modeled after Albert Einstein and Carl Sandburg. In retrospect, he looked more like a cross between Yoda and Clara "Where's the beef?" Peller.
