Five animals (and one human child) demonstrate their jumping prowess in this question-and-answer style story featuring thickly painted illustrations by Braun. The question of the title repeats on each spread, and the animal it refers to appears opposite atop a flap; lifting it showcases each jump. An orange cat leaps out of its bed to playfully pursue a mouse, while a boy in a red hoodie finds a puddle to splash in on the final page. Braun gives readers both a stress-free animal guessing game and an invitation to show off their own jumping skills. Simultaneously available: Who Can Swim? Up to age 3. (Mar.)

Children's Literature - Suzanne Javid
A cat can jump. So can a frog and a squirrel as well as a kangaroo and a dog, too. This title is a wonderful lift-the-flap board book with sturdy, colorful mixed media illustrations and uncluttered large text done in a consistent black font. Repetitive phrases, thick line font, simple shapes, rounded corners and bold colors make the book easy to share with babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. Full-page background colors with a flap and recognizable animal character are found on each page. Consistent page layout has a rectangular flap on the right side of each double-page spread. Opening the flap reveals one of the six animals hopping or jumping along with the repetitive phrase stating the animal can jump. A good choice for the three and under crowd and a fun book to read aloud and introduce animals and flaps to young children. Children will enjoy joining in on all the repetition. The last page has a picture of a young child. Can you guess who can jump? This title is the first U. S. edition and a wonderful addition to a personal or school library. A very happy, cheerful read. Reviewer: Suzanne Javid; Ages 0 to 3.

Toddlers are introduced to a variety of animals that jump in this lift-the-flap offering. On each left-hand page, large, black, wavering letters ask the question "Who can jump?" A stationary animal is pictured on the right-hand page. When the good-sized, rectangular flap on the right is opened, it reveals the animal in the act of jumping, hopping or leaping into the air along with a simple sentence: "A cat can jump" or "A frog can jump." The final pages offer a small twist; a little blond child decked out in red rain gear is featured jumping into a puddle, along with the words: "You can jump!" The cheerful mixed-media illustrations are what make this offering stand out. Thick lines, simple shapes and bold colors make the pictures especially toddler friendly. Companion volume Who Can Swim? is even more engaging, as it incorporates a bit of a guessing game. Only a small portion of each animal is depicted when the flap is closed, allowing little ones a chance to guess which animal will ultimately be revealed. Also, the flaps here are different shapes, adding some welcome variety and mimicking the fluidity of the water.Simple and sweet lift-the-flap fare that toddlers will love. (Board book. 6 mos.-2)
