Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
Engaging... Only a small portion of each animal is depicted when the flap is closed, allowing little ones a chance to guess which animal will ultimately be revealed. Also, the flaps here are different shapes, adding some welcome variety and mimicking the fluidity of the water. Simple and sweet lift-the-flap fare that toddlers will love.

Children's Literature - Lorraine Donohue Bonzelet
One simple question, “Who Can Swim?” is the basis for this board book. The answer to this question is partially revealed making it a wonderful guessing game for toddlers. Lifting the sturdy, water-shaped, elongated flap reveals the answer. Children are sure to guess correctly on the last page. The illustrations are vibrant and traced with bold black lines, featuring adorable penguins, whales and fish. Braun’s artwork is colorful using soothing blues and greens for the water and sky. The yellow wall and water splash on the last page generates excitement. This is a good tool prior to a child’s first leap into the swimming pool. The baby whale being protected by its mother might comfort little ones afraid to swim. A word of caution: after the initial turn of the flap, it does not stay in place when the page is turned. The answer is automatically revealed and the joy of flipping is gone. To resolve, turn the page slowly from the upper right corner. Braun also authored and illustrated the action packed “Who Can Jump?” lift-the-flap book. Reviewer: Lorraine Donohue Bonzelet; Ages 0 to 3.

Readers are asked the same simple question on each double-page spread: Who can jump? A seated animal on the right side of each page offers a big clue. When the flap is lifted, the animal is shown in motion with the answer. ("Who can jump? A frog can jump.") Thickly applied paint and bold black outlines make the illustrations pop. Ideal for toddler storytimes.—Kiera Parrott, School Library Journal
