Who Comes?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Victoria Crenson
It is evening on the African savanna when readers open Chandra's Who Comes? One-by-one, thirsty animals visit a waterhole for a drink as a hungry lion creeps closer and closer. Each potential prey is hauntingly described - "A shadow slides between the trees. Someone softly stirs the leaves. Twilight rides upon his back. Who comes? Who?"-before the animal is revealed. Suspense mounts until the inevitable strike by the lion and a zebra meets its death. After the kill, the other animals return to the waterhole to drink, safe from the lion for the time being. The wild beauty of both the hunter and hunted is reflected in Katie Lee's paintings. Each scene, whether illuminated by gold setting sun or moonlight, captures the vitality and grace of the animals and the richness of the African plain.
Hazel Rochman
Set on the African savanna, this lovely, simple poem tells of a lion waiting at a water hole, watching the various animals come to drink. Glowing double-page-spread watercolors show how the scene changes as the sun sets and first a wildebeest, then a giraffe, then a waterbuck, and then a zebra drink at the pool. It's unrealistic that each animal is alone at the pool, though a herd of wildebeest is glimpsed in the background of one picture. Tension builds until the lion creeps nearer on silent paws, and "beneath the wild and silent sky / the lion leaps. The zebra dies." Some of the lines rhyme, and there are echoes and half echoes in the sounds of the words. The repeated question, "Who comes? Who?" will draw children into the drama as "hoofbeats drum upon the ground" and someone comes to the water hole.
