Waddell (the Little Bear books) introduces a cozy feline family preparing for bedtime in this smallish-format volume. As Mama helps Holly take her bath and wind down for the night, Holly wants to play their go-to-bed game. So Mama repeatedly poses the question in the title and the kitten names a specific member of her family and says why she loves each one. Hollys favorite part of the game comes when she has run out of family members to mentionsave for Mama, whom she teasingly leaves until the tail end. The kitten even adds in incidental friends to prolong the suspense (I love... the three kittens who roll down the hill; I love... the cat with the hat that we met yesterday in the woods). Mamas response to being omitted from Hollys litany (I think I might cry!) adds a humorous snap to this heartfelt tale. Once again Waddell hits the target with preschoolers just starting to flirt with independence. Ashforths (Horatios Bed) softly focused watercolor and pencil art, set into pale, mint-green pages, accentuates the soothing mood of the text. She makes the most of Hollys list of loved ones, using the kittens descriptions to fill in details of snug domestic scenes in Hollys kitchen, bedroom and surrounding hillsides. Preschoolers will love being in on Hollys go-to-bed game, and will want to try it out for themselves. Ages 3-6. (Apr.)

The anthropomorphic cats in this story will warm the hearts of all. As Little Holly is getting ready for bed, she tells Mama that she wants to play the go-to-bed game. It is a litany of questions asked by Mama and responses by Holly. "Who do you love, Holly" and the little kitten names the person and tells why. It all builds up to the finale with Holly declaiming her love for Mama and Mama responding "And I love you too," A delightful and sweet little book.

PreS-Gr 2An affectionate peek into a cozy nighttime ritual. Called in from the yard for supper, Holly joins her family at the table (these cats sit in chairs, dine on china, and wear dresses and waistcoats). Playfully standing backwards on her chair, she begs to play the go-to-bed game and Mama begins it by asking her, Who do you love? Holly runs through almost everyone but Mama (who repeats the question as she bathes the kitten and puts her to bed), saving her for last. Waddell captures a special moment between parent and child with a frankness that respects the youngsters autonomy and sincere love. His language is innocent and childlike. Ashforth provides fetching pastel watercolor paintings set off with white borders and placed against soft green backgrounds. Each picture is a tiny tableau of the object of Hollys affection: Pa telling her stories, Grandma baking a cake, her brother letting her ride his bike, the postman delivering a letter. Accompanying almost every illustration is a small cameo portrait of Holly preparing for bed. Waddell's latest is a bedtime love tease that neatly abstains from the competitiveness and maneuvering that can mar the how-much-do-you-love genre. In this case, a cat and her kitten engage in a well-worn, getting-ready-for-bed joust. Holly, the kitten, asks Mama to ask her, "Who do you love?" Mama obliges and Holly rattles through a list that includes grandmother and grandfather, brother, and father, along with the reasons she loves them. Then comes the part of the game Holly likes best: "Ê`Who else do you love?' asked Mama. `I think that's everyone now,' Holly said. `You've left somebody out!' said Mama." So Holly names the postman, some friends, and cousins. When Mama sighs that she's about to cry, Holly softens and confesses her love for her mother. It's all very tender, and in conjunction with Ashforth's drowsy watercolors—resembling John Goodall's in style and mastery—is a story that almost melts with geniality. (Picture book. 3-6)

    An absolute preschool must have!

    I found this book in a library and started reading it to my 2 year old daughter and my 5 year old son who has an ASD. Talk about the sweetest way to teach about loving others. The illustrations are exquisite in detail and the story really emphasizes what is important in life... playing outside with friends, baking cake with Grandma or teasing your mom just a little bit. Just had to have my own copy and concur that this is the purrfect birthday gift or stocking stuffer for a preschooler. Again, a child as young as 2 who will sit for a more narrative story will love this.

    beautiful & darling!!

    My 5 year old daughter & I love this story. The pictures are wonderful and the story is so cute. We give this to all of our little girl friends for their birthdays! My 3 year old boy actually really likes this book also!
