Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Unlike many books for young readers, where the new words are listed in a glossary at the end of the book, this one presents the new words on the opening spread along with a table of contents. Could Ralph Baer, the developer of the first video game, have imagined the video game mania that exists today? He emigrated from Germany and he learned to fix radios and eventually went to college. He learned about making TVs and thought there were other ways to use TVs than to just watch shows. The book replicates his drawings for the video game soccer. However, his first video game was a hockey game. The first game involved two people moving spots to chase each other with the objective of catching the opponent’s spot. In addition to video games, Baer worked on the development of other games such as Simon and Maniac. In 2006, he received the National Medal of Technology. The book closes with an activity, references to other books and web sites, and an index. While short and sweet, there is a great message about the man who never stopped pursuing his dream. Ralph Baer is certainly an individual to be emulated. Part of the “I Like Inventors!” series. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot; Ages 5 to 7.
